Uploading questions

Post by meatballheadzzz » Thu Dec 22, 2005 3:56 am

Yes, I know I am stupid. But I have been spending 2 days stright pretty much figuring out how to put my amv's up on here. How to compress it, do I need to download things to compress it, after compressing it I have to go on here and do stuff and now uploading. Frankly, my head hurts and I am tired of reading things that I don't understand.

Can I some how upload right on to the website, or do I have to either; bring it in from another, or download some software that would upload it? Because I tried to download the software and it wasn't working to well and I really don't want to be downloading anything unless its an amv.
I put the video on another website and linked it, but I really rather have the viewer be able to download the video on to their own computer. Can I do that easly? Can anyone put into english what I have to do?

I might cry if no one can help me out.

ok, calm down.

You need to go to the main page and log in.

Then you need to click "Upload Video" on the left hand side of the page after you log in.

Then you need to read the rules, make sure your video complies with them, click the little box signifying that you read and understand the rules, and then select the video of yours that you want to upload from the list box of all your database entries that don't have videos uploaded yet.

Once you select the right video, click "Request upload permission"

This will put you on a page that will give you an FTP address, a login, and a password. Now you will need to open up your favorite FTP program, I reccomend Smart FTP or SecureFX, and enter that information into the proper fields in that program, then log in. (I reccomend using the copy/paste feature for this, it makes it easy.)

Once you're logged in, you can upload your video using the program.

Once it's done uploading, go back to the page that told you the address, and click the link that leads to where you will confirm the upload. Here, you will be given a link to the video you just uploaded. Click the link, download the video, and watch it. This is to make sure it uploaded correctly.

Once you've made sure it's been uploaded correctly, confirm the download.

It's pretty simple if you read through the directions and follow them.

Thanks for your help you guys. I have another question. I know there is a reason for them making us do the uploading the hard way, but does anyone know the reason? Is it because there are so many amv's on this site that it would overload the server? Or something like that? Just out of coriousity, I am not trying to be a smart ass.

This isn't the hard way. This is the normal way. The way things have been uploaded to remote websites since the internet formed such technology. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, and is the itnernet standard for file transfers.

Oh, one other thing.. you are using the FTP program to upload to the server. Possibly at the same time as many other people. It's not a matter of overloading the server at all.

I am not sure what other means of uploading a file we would use... This is certainly the most efficient way of doing it.

's probably thinking of something similar to a web FTP interface, kinda like what youtube.com and other things use.
