sorta off topic but are cons with amv comps, running them illegally?

Many conventions buy licenses from the record companies to play the music in the AMVs they show, from what I've read and heard. So the record companies don't bother them about it.

This last sentence is probably true just in practical terms. But your first sentence is not correct, at least in the U.S. where the DMCA outlaws "acts of circumvention." More here (EFF.org). (Skip down to section 2 on that page.)
Or check 17 USC 1201 directly.

Even if you could make a successful appeal using 1201(a)(B), you could still be held liable for trafficking in devices to circumvent copyright protection technologies.

Well, keep in mind that location matters. The DMCA is U.S. Code. Wouldn't necessarily apply to citizens of other countries.

Advent children

Is it illegal to make a music video to advent children if you do not own the dvd from japan ? :P i.e will it be used against you in court of law blah blah . dumb question i know, probably yes something could happen but chances are 1 //101000010110 just thought i'd ask :)
