What is Pop music?

Post by Gallup » Mon Dec 05, 2005 4:22 pm

My college room mate is doing a search on pop music. What music groups would count as being part of the pop music genre? Anybody know of sites that would give some info about this genre's history?

In the broadest sense, "pop" is short for popular. Popular music historically is music made by and for the lower classes, in contrast to "classical" music which required symphony orchestras and was intended solely for the well-to-do. Basically, popular music covers rock, rap, jazz, blues, and any and all derivatives thereof.

Since such a broad term is completely useless, "pop" has been reassigned to mean that radio-ready overproduced vocal stuff everyone seems to hate but still manages to sell ten trillion copies in its first fifteen minutes. Although there's also power-pop, covered by Matthew Sweet and Teenage Fanclub and such, and indie pop, such as the Shins and the New Pornographers. So it's still nebulous.

And check the All Music Guide for some pointers, they're usually pretty good with genres. Although for the most part, I wouldn't want to use any Internet resources for a college project unless they belonged to a university or official scholarly organization.

Yup he pretty much covered it. Pop is in the brodest definition any "popular" music made in "modern" times Modern being anything 16th century and beyond.

and I'm glad to be the one posting there ever required dictionary.com definition that's posted in every "what is (____)" thread but is ultimately useless anyway.

pop music

n : music of general appeal to teenagers; a bland watered-down version of rock'n'roll with more rhythm and harmony and an emphasis on romantic love

They were burying rock,
Threw shit all over it and crucified it
Trampled, separated, tore apart
Blasphemized, swore and howled
The masters of sex-attack led the charge
Half-literate pop-minstrels
They're all like Mohammed Ali after fighting
Lip-synching dummies and slits
Show-business paid all the expenses
Gave professional crowbars and shovels
So that retards never go out of fashion
So that brains are full of rags and cotton

Hear the sound of music drifting in the aisles
Elevator prozac stretching on for miles

The music of the future will not entertain
It's only meant to repress and neutralise your brain

(Chorus)
Soul gets squeezed out
Edges get blunt
Demographic
Gives what you want

One of the wonders of the world is going down
It's going down I know
It's one of the blunders of the world that no-one cares
No-one cares enough
(/chorus)

Now the sound of music comes in silver pills
Engineered to suit you building cheaper thrills

The music of rebellion makes you wanna rage
But it's made by millionaires who are nearly twice your age

(Chorus)

- "The Sound of Muzak", Porcupine Tree (2002, In Absentia)
