Their new album came out today. I'm listening to it as I type. I'm on Track 6 right now, which is called "Hazel Eyes". This album's really good. What these guys are doing is good. ROCK AND ROLL IS BACK!!!!!!!

It came back in 2004 (or at least late 2003), but this just further proves this new album just further proves that it's back. Haven't decided on a favorite track from it yet, because I just heard the songs other than "One Way Ticket" for the first time today. I think it will either be "Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" or "Blind Man" though.

The new album consists mostly of AC/DC's rhythm section, ELO's melodies, and Boston's guitars (and occasionally Delp's overdubbed vocal harmonies). However, it manages to do all that without having the punch of AC/DC, the catchiness of ELO, or the grandness of Boston. It's really one of the most mediocre albums to come out this year.

The Rye Coalition and the Hold Steady are good classic-rock throwbacks, the Darkness is just average. The first track is admittedly somewhat toe-tappin', but the rest is kinda forgettable and uninteresting.

pink_hedgehog: rock and roll left when people started mistaking Journey for Boston. It was all downhill afterwards. (Hey, this could be an interesting discussion on its own!)

Actually, rock started going downhill in the early 90s.

Well seeing as how rock and roll is completely different to what we're talking about I'll say that rock'n roll died out in about the 1970's with the advent of punk.

Now the darkness is supposedly the revival of Glam rock which properly died out in the early 1980's when electro-pop came into fashion, then in the late eighties hair metal was fashionable for a while before kiddie-pop (boy bands etc) happened, now we're into the era of rap/hip-hop...all of which leads me back to the point: Rock and Roll is still dead, The Darkness isn't even a re-hash of old rock 'n roll, it's just a slightly more metallic glam rock...like queen with two guitarists...and no Freddie Mercury.

All of which is quite OT really, so I'll close by saying I preferred their first album.

As a brit I would say this is not the case as Britpop came about in the 90's and, contrary to it's name, it was rock as no one had seen in quite a while (bands fighting, even time on major news programs being devoted to the Blur/Oasis scraps) and the music was pretty good too. Oh, of course grunge came about in the 90's (or late 80's) and no-one can say they haven't been touched by Nirvana at some point.

But as for The Darkness and their new album, it's O.K. I wouldn't slate it too soon. It isn't as exciting as the first album (after all rock was being revived -=GASP=-) but that's the trend in (alot of) recent music: a lack of excitement.

I liked One Way Ticket better than Permission to Land, although to be fair I listened to the new one much more carefully. Hawkins' falsetto is way better on the new one, so it doesn't sound like he's straining as much, and all the Queen/ELO/Boston-style harmonies sound pretty good.

Although you're right, it's not exciting, but I didn't think the first one was very exciting either. Mostly they're just kinda fun to listen to.
