That weird introduction was originally a trailer for the film when it was released in Japan. Also, according to what I read on a animeondvd.com forum, there was originally planned to be a longer live-action sequence involving the seiyuus of the three main female characters as live-action versions of their respective characters.

Yeah I just finished watching it a few minutes ago. And I noticed there was more live footage at the end. I think it was to make the point of reality vs. fantasy. The whole movie is about what's real and what's not. Well not the whole movie, but that's what I got from it.
