Phade - An idea for future of this AMV site

Post by Someday123 » Tue Nov 22, 2005 10:53 am

With the recent problems about the legality of this site involving a few bands, it struck me that this site ough to become incorporated as an actual non-profit organization. That way, donations would be exactly that - bonafied tax-deductible donations (maybe donations would go up if they were tax-deductible?). The site could be a non-prof dedicated to supporting the creators of AMVs. I really think AMVs have good legal legs to stand on if they are distributed without profit. I dunno - just an idea. Maybe silly but interesting.

Just because it's non-profit doesn't make it tax deductible. It generally needs to be a charity, and this site most certainly is not.

The site would also have to register with the feds as a 501(c) or 503(c) or something like that. Even if that were possible it requires accounting and legal headaches that aren't worth the trouble.

If it is possible to get through all of the legal rigamarole, though, it would be a great idea. At least in my humble opinion.

Ok, I'm ready to say something that probably will sound stupid but who knows, it just came to my mind.

And if donations would be also used to pay copyrights of these bands?
I even do not know the cost that would proudce something like these, but I think that it's too much. No.. I think it's really not a smart idea. :?

Would it work, probably not, unless everybody decided to donate about 100 times more than they currently are and a several miracles regarding acceptance by record companies occured simultainously without any work on behalf of the org. Simply asking any one of the companies in question may (hell, probably WOULD) result in one of them saying "no" then the shit hitting the fan.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I guess I don't know much about this sort of thing. I just figured - a-m-v.org doesn't make a profit, then they must be a non-profit group! Ha - I guess there's more to it than that. Thanks again.
