Moral Delema.
Ok I need to start this out with a little story. Long ago in the way before time, I used to play other peoples amv's in one media player, and a song in another. I would turn down their song and use one of mine in its place. i would just do this for fun. Because i did not know how to edit at the time. One Day i Stumbled over a song that someone used to show his girly friend how much he loved her or somthing. It used the anime "video girl ai". I have long forgotten what song that person used. but the song i used fit so much better. So here is my question. would it be wrong of me to use the anime and pretty much the first 3 minutes of this persons amv idea. to make my own video?? i mean i would be using all fresh footage, not his. but the outline would be there ya know. is that wrong??
Close calls are always the most exciting. Coming close is always the most dissapointing.

I can't guarantee that you'll be spared beatings, though, nor will I guarantee that I won't beat you myself if only for the hell of it.

If it's just for fun and your own amusement, there's nothing wrong with it, but the minute you upload it or claim the video as your own, people can and will accuse you rightfully of stealing another person's footage and edits.
Now doing a new video with your own source footage and edits, that's something else all together...

hmmn, theres a couple ways this can be taken:
1. I once saw TWO videos: Same Concept, Same Song, different Anime SAME EXACT EDITING...
one was actually a tribute to the other... the BAD thing was they both entered the same contest (on which I happened to be a judge o.0, dinky online thing)
one was Yu Yu Hakusho and the other was Kenshin OVA...
Kenshin was the original AMV, and Hakusho was the "tribute" AMV..
When the guy who made the Kenshin AMV found out about the Hakusho one, he started bitching to me about it on AIM o.0 about how rude it was, and was all over the forums (that the contest was on) bitching about how the guy coppied his style (same exact style, different anime) but everyone tried to calm him down and tell him that it was even in the video description that it was a tribute and was inspired by his AMV... he still wasnt satisfied with that, but overall he ended up beating out his tribute, and i think that calmed him down the most o.0..
So 1, this person might get mad at you, might due to contact them and talk to them about it..
Ex 2. how many Euphoria "knock offs" are there? how angry does Koop get about them? o.0
2. they might not get mad o.0
OVER ALL IF YOU ARE USING YOUR OWN FOOTAGE AND NOT TAKING IT FROM THE OTHER AMV, there shouldnt be too much of a problem... o.0 but it might help your cause to talk with the original creator of that AMV you have o.0 BEFORE you post anything on the site where they might accidentally come across it o.0.

I, too, have made a tribute AMV (My ADVentures in Translation is a tribute to K-type's CHIHUAHUA!). Before I uploaded the video to the .org, I emailed K-type to let hime know what I had done, and asked if he would be offended if I uploaded it. K-type was cool with it, as long as I kept the name of my video substantially different than his. I also made sure to credit him with the inspiration in my video comments and whenever I discuss the video.
Long story short, it's OK to be inspired by someone else's video, it's OK to pay tribute to them. It is not OK to take footage from someone else's video and claim it as your own (that includes transitions and effects). If you plan to homage another person's AMV, be sure to contact that person before you upload your version. I wouldn't enter it into any contests (I put ADVentures in AWA's Expo just so it would be shown - I didn't expect to win anything. I really should have made it non-competing), but if the other creator doesn't mind, then I'll leave that decision to you.
Hope that's helpful.

To paraphrase one Mr. Cool James, please refrain from referring to it as a revival, I've been lurking for ages.

thnks for the replies..i was kinda scared to ask this question due to the famously violent nature of some forum goers. this is what i came up with
1. all the footage will be my own..my rip and my placement.
2. a decent ammount of important scenes will be "reflected"
3. I will give credit for the ideas i was given to a unamed video creator...cause i dont know the dudes name..
with that said i dont want a tribute cause its not gonna be anything near what the dude made... different songs and different editing.. but i will "reflect" some of the scene ideas.. how does that sound????

I think it's quite unoriginal, and I'd be a little peeved if it were me, but in the end it's more of a call on the part of the original creator. From that description, I'm guessing the vid in question is MJ's Siempre Juntos. If that's the case, you should take it up with him.
