Use the pen tool to define a path around the object to remain after the masking. Hit the Paths tab of one of the mini-windows, whichever one it's on, and right-click the path and select "Selection from Path" or whatever it's called. Invert the selection if necessary. Delete. Repeat for as many frames as necessary.

In photoshop, I prefer the quick mask mode myself. With the quick mask mode you can paint masks with the regular tools rather than the cumbersome pen tool. It has the advantage of being a lot faster and easier, but the disadvantage of leaving you with less "clean" edges.

I tend to come from the polygonal lasso school of masking.
