Damn your opinion guard

Post by requiett » Sat Nov 05, 2005 8:02 am

The recently installed opinion blocker doesn't allow me to give opinions for non-local videos without using the local server's link. Are you dinks actually trying to blow bandwidth? I don't like having to download a whole video again just for the sake of adding opinions, and it's discouraging me from even leaving any at all.

They're trying to stop people who've never seen the video from leaving opinions. It's happened. I'm sure creators all over the Org will mourn the loss of your opinion if it comes to that.

I just wanted to say that I still don't like it, and if it continues I may start only offering links on my own webspace (especially once I switch to a plan that gives me enough bandwidth for a flat rate instead of only giving me 5 GB/month and charging me for overage), and to hell with star scores.

Though I may be biased because I've never gotten a flaming review (though I have received a review for the wrong video once).

there are lots of instances where you may have seen the video but can't submit an opinion. The very few people who were going to give false opinions will now just burn bandwidth to do so. Legitamate opinionators are now dissuaded from posting their thoughts.

Did you not consider that Requiett might have a good reason for choosing the non-local link over the local link?

For instance, if he's a stickler for video quality and the non-local copy is superior in that area, or if he wants something he can play anywhere and the non-local link is to an MPEG-1 while the local is an AVI, or if he's on a slow connexion and the non-local copy is significantly smaller than the local one, or if he doesn't want to give a star rating?

Forgot to mention this, but there's also the consideration of doing one's small part to help ease the load on the Org's servers, to which, as Requiett said, the opinion blocker runs counter.

Myself, if I have a choice between a local link and a non-local one, I almost always take the non-local one. Partially because of that and partially because I don't like having to give star ratings.

I understand this but I still don't like this.
There MUST be another way to block these jerks, I'm on a 56k that goes like a 28.8 modem, I simply can't, can't download videos, so I ask to friends to download them for me. I could ask them to use my account but.. Why? There must be another way.

First of all, what Scintilla said. Secondly, it's possible that you obtained the video in some way other than the Local server, such as from the editor's webspace, or even from a friend's collection. I got a good number of videos that I never downloaded from the .org, because a friend sent them to me.

All this will do is force people to download from the local server, even if they already have the video. As has been said, that will eat up the .org's bandwidth unnecessarily. And personally, I'd rather get a few bad opinions which are easily ignored/removed, than drain the site's resources for videos I already have.

Yeah.. or you could figure a way to make it register the offsite link clicks or something like that. just today i wanted to give ops for 3 vids that i dl:ed using the offsite link (yeah they were in better quality) it seems i need to dl them again using local dl and that just takes alot of bandwith.

Hopefully somebody figures a solution
