While I am VERY greatful to have one the best comedy in pro award I am also rather baffeled.
I don't see why my video had to be censored and hence shown in the late night block. I can't find anything objectionable to it that would prevent it from being shown. It was shown during Iron chef with teh warning "Everyone under 18 shouldn't watch" and I was later told it could only be shown during the hentai AMV block. YET it was still shown during the Pro block on Sunday.
I mean no offense to AWA or its staff but I would like some clarifaction on this and some feedback from people who have either seen it or would download it to that regard. Anime Expo didn't have any quarrels showing my video and I've always considered them more touchy on the subject.

It could be the fact the song talks about masturbation. Seeing as how Saturday is the most popular day for the convention, that could mean that a lot of parents may be with their younger teenage children and may not want their children exposed to such things. The Wired Knight wrote:While I am VERY greatful to have one the best comedy in pro award I am also rather baffeled.

I'll compile a comprehensive list when I'm more concious (just got back from breakdown) but I did spot two errors off the top of my head...
However: about an hour and a half before the contest starts, we were busy mastering out the contests to SVHS tape. When we run in main, we have a VERY tight viewing schedule. Past years and other conventions have shown the danger of screening the contest off of computers, with all the codec and crashing problems. So we always master SVHS tapes of the contest and just play those, VHS being the stablest medium available.
Problem was, an hour and a half before the contest, we discover that the deck is completely fucked. It hadn't been recording audio, and the video was badly torn up too. The only option was to run a computer over to main and have the MMI tech guys hook it into the system and run straight off of the computer. This was hard, because the MMI guys weren't set up for our system. We spent the rest of the time trying to figure out how to integrate main's sound system with our computer output, 'cause they had to re-adjust everything accordingly. Further, the ADV panel had been told that their panel was 1.5 hours (instead of an hour) long, leaving us no dead setup time and no time to clear the room. They then ran over about three minutes into our block. With the additional audio problems and trying to re-sort everyone out of the front rows (sorry to the creators who got displaced further back... I really thought that we were going to clear the room) we started about 11-13 minutes late.
After us was a sound check in that room for our musical guests. I'd been told in no uncertain terms that I would be booted if we ran over. So I had to trim the play schedule to make up for the 11-13 lost minutes. Expo, since it has the most awards, lost two vids (the Scenic Mononoke Hime video and the parody (also Chobits) video). Pro lost one video (yours) largely because the language being a little questionable made it the first choice for a paniced elimination, and Masters' lost the last non-winning entry, Carlos Corral's Lain video, that was taken out just because it was at the bottom of the list.
It was shown later at Iron chef for two reasons. 1) to make up for its elimination from the contest screening and 2) IC is run entirely by Omar, and the call was his. It was shown in the Pro block for two reasons 1) 'cause I didn't make clear to my staff the concerns. (I would have been fine with a warning issued to the audience). 2) it was requested.
I hope that clears up all the questions.
For the first one, you got the winner right, but not the video. Aqua Sky won for a video called "Lurid Enchantment" done to an anime I hadn't seen before, named something like "Portrait La Petit Marie Cossette", which was an unearthly creepy visual. The second one, the award title is actually the "Joseph Campbell Memorial Character Profile Award." Kind of an inside joke.Brakus wrote:Best Horror: "Nightmare Realm" by Aqua Sky Prods.
Symphony X "King of Terrors" / Clock Tower 3
Best Character Profile: "I Walk Alone" by Michael LaBrie & Meri Cantoni
Green Day "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" / Various
Expo's our open forum competiton. So long as a video has never been submitted to us before, it can still compete in Expo, regardless of awards at other conventions it might have won.Illia Sadri wrote:That video is about a year old and hell he submited that to Ohayocon among other cons late last year and early this year.
Long story on this one, with lots of steps in between. First off, the lyrics skirt really close to the edge of what I think I can display in the main viewing room. It's hilarious, but gets close to the edge with the "just grab your dick and double-click" line. Everything else is clean enough, and I'd have no problem showing it, and it was originally in the lineup for showing during the contest. I figured I'd just slip that one through. The Wired Knight wrote:While I am VERY greatful to have one the best comedy in pro award I am also rather baffeled.

My frustration is more at the editor in this case since expo is meant to be open but when the same couple videos are being sent to virtually every convention in the country, that's abusing it. Unfortunately cons can't force the editors to be ethical but it's disheartening that people feel they need to send their video everywhere just to feel worthy rather than simply doing a few and moving on to a new project. Even the best videos have to have a retirement point and simply stand aside.MCWagner wrote:Expo's our open forum competiton. I want to hear about new videos and ideas circulating personally. It's not fair to the people who create new videos.

Ah~ Ok, thanks for the clarification. Like I said, I hold nothing against AWA I was just curious do to the discrepency between the two cons it's been shown at. Though you may want to make it clear to the staffers about the video then, because one guy told me that it can only be shown with the hentai block, which does seem a bit extreme. Issuing a warning makes sense.
Heh, to be honest I actually considered bleeping the word dick out when I edited the video originally since I was afraid that the line might get my video DQed were it sent to cons.
Good work everyone in the contests and congrats to the other winners.
Oh and to Hsien: That could have ended very badly since the Utena movie was accessible to you during the contest.
