"Endless Sacrifice" by Dream Theater [5 minute edi

Post by Gepetto » Fri Sep 02, 2005 6:18 pm

Here's to seven months of weekend work *raises glass*

*cahem* anyways, here it is. Endless Sacrifice. Eleven animes and one of the best songs I've ever listened to. Many days' work resulted in the partition for the video, and it turned out better than I had first wanted it.

I'm hardly the one to talk, but at least compared to MY other projects, this one is the best. Now that it's over, the next one will be made with Premiere Pro. But that has nothing to do with anything, does it? =P

Here's the link: Endless Sacrifice

Please leave an op, yada yada... just post an op here if you like (but please give me feedback)

And raise your hand if you liked it!

You more than cut the song in half. :( I'm not sure I can listen to a butchered version, but I'll begin downloading. Oh, how big are the spoilers in Berserk and Hellsing? I'm planning on watching them soon (I think), and I'd prefer to avoid significant spoilers.

  i know, it's really sad to have to cut it (especially Dream Theater) but no one has patience to watch a 13 minute video (which would probably exceed the 100mb limit too, unfortunately). I didn't hack the song too much, though. I kept the beginning and faded out right before the very big instrumental portion. Maybe I'll make an extended-play version someday

the Berserk spoiler is a 1-2 second scene from the last episode. Not at all significant on standalone but still last episode.
the Hellsing bit is a few cut-scenes from a battle around episode 10. I'd say very little to little importance.

unless you really mind all kinds of spoilers, i'd go ahead.

Hmm... start with the good, end with the obvious?

I actually liked the editing, despite a lot of it being just out of sync and having cheesy effects. They may have been cheesy, but they managed to flow a bit. The editing actually reminds me a lot of what I aimed for in my first video; major priority on flow and sync. I think with a bit more effort, you could have fine-tuned the sync and used some transparencies for a few parts (I think I'd give you a 6 out of 10 for effort...). I think you did a good job at kicking up the editing once the heavy part started, and that's very important with this song. I would try, in future videos, to not use effects like the distortion and emboss, however, unless it's fairly consistent and actually matches the sound.

For the bad... I don't think you did the song justice. There was no coherent plot (what with all the various anime). Sometimes a character would just appear because that particular clip was relevant with the footage, but it wouldn't contribute at all to the grand scheme of things. I understand it's hard to find just one anime with enough footage to make a good action video out of this, but that's the only way to do the song justice.

All in all, I'd give it a 3 out of 5, because it's right in the middle. It was a nice attempt, and I like the direction of your editing.

see, now that's a well-written op, unlike those written by all of you *stares down at black list*

*cahem* thank you very much for the criticism and suggestions, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me improve my work. And yes, the existance of billions of micro-plots and no great plot really isn't good. I agree but I just wouldn't have managed this song with only one anime (which I prefer) so I used many.

sorry for going trigger-happy with the effects... I'll do myself a favor and do a few clean cuts now :) and I'll lay low on the emboss, I just thought it was pretty ^_^

about the sync being off, I watched it again and only noticed it in two points (other than a part that *looks* like a horrible lip-sync but isn't one at all, at the second "and so alone")
They are:
"The rain is pouring down" and between "the emptiness inside" and "is growing deeper still". What else did I miss?

Thank you again, and I promise to do the next one justice.

Itekimasu.

Well, maybe nothing. There's so much going on with Dream Theater's music that I very likely didn't notice what you were syncing to. Most of what I perceived as missed sync were flashes and inversions. Lots of them I figured were synced to the percussion, but it wasn't quite consistent enough for me to really grasp the first time through.

But I'll watch it again for a few parts...

0:12.5 - was that supposed to be synced to the clip change to GitS? Because the clip came in late. If it was synced to the head motion, I don't think it worked well.

Following that were a few similar clip changes that didn't seem synced, and since they are drastic visual changes, it disrupts flow.

1:17 - I think you were syncing with the piano? Might just be me, but I think the edit came in a frame or two early. Actually, after watching it a few times, I just think that would have been better if you had cut that clip in (the head shot) one frame earlier, used a transparency, and faded it out with the piano key. The note hangs on longer than the edit, so it looks odd.

1:21 - that inversion... was that synced to percussion? If it was synced to what I thought it was, it came in early.

1:42 - right after the drum roll (the cut into an entirely new scene) seemed a bit off.

2:20 - I can't figure out what those black bars are synced to...

There are a couple other parts, but I think you get the point. I don't think there was enough method to the sync, so maybe that's the problem.

As a Dream Theater fan, I had to download it myself.

Not a bad place to edit the song, right before the instrumental break.

I didn't much like the notes. It was ok in the beginning, but the return of them was a bit lame.

Nice editing, overall.

It seems long songs would be tough to keep people with. I have an idea using Pain Of Salvation's "Nightmist" for a EVA vid, but the song is about 7 minutes long, which is probably too long for a good video...

Thx for the feedback!

I don't know that particular song, but I like Pain of Salvation. Let me know if you ever go through with the idea
