What's the best Wireless router to get? (I'm back!)

Post by Mikkamous » Sat Sep 03, 2005 12:50 pm

Hello I'm back again :D I finally decided on which laptop to get, and I'm about to order a HP ZD8000 customized laptop that has...

Operating System Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Media Center Edition
Processor Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 650 w/HT Technology, 3.4GHz
Display 17.0" WXGA+ BrightView Wide Viewing (1440x900)
Memory 512MB DDR2 SDRAM, 400MHz (2x256MB)
Hard Drive 100 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
Primary CD/DVD Drive LightScribe 8x DVD+/-RW&CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer
Graphics Card 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) X600
Networking 54g(TM) Integ. Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN & Bluetooth

pretty nice! and soon I'll be churning out tons of AMVs because I'm getting adobe Video Collection standard 2.5! Sweeeeet. But now it leads me to my question... with all the video work I'll be doing on this thing... which is the best wireless router to get? I've browsed through a few of them, but they all seem pretty much the same. I do know some are better at streaming video while others are just overall faster. Can anyone throw some suggestions at me?

Oh yeah... and if you have any thing you AMV creators use along with your laptops (if you use a laptop) what other goodies should I get that would be helpful? Thanks!

oh yeah and I know the ram is low (512 mb) but I plan to upgrade that to 2GB worth. The ram prices on HP were a rip off so I decided to upgrade other stuff I couldn't get as cheap such as the HD and screen.

your wireless hardware is only 54MB/ persec

you only need a standard wireless router that does the same. anything will do.

seriously . ANY router will do....you just need to pay attention to its speeds. one thing i DO caution tho, just because your router has transfer speeds on 108 or something. it does not mean your computer will also speed up. and usually, depending on how far your compy is from the router, the speeds vary as well

i recommend either D-Link, or netgear, D-Link because i've always use D-link and i know how to work the firewall and services perfeclty..
netgear is good, because its easy to use....

others i bet are good too, just anything that isn't old

and yes, get more RAM asap.

btw, why do you need a fast wireless connection for AMVs? O_O

I use a lot of Netgear wireless products for home networks. Their wireless routers are excellent- good range, great interface, lots of options. Little more pricey than most, but worth it in my mind. But once again, you don't need the latest and greatest- see if you can pick up a used one, maybe?
