If im doing this right what is the problem?

Post by Ry0_San » Wed Aug 31, 2005 10:33 am

I am using DVD Decrypter to burn them to the hard drive I then convert them to .avi then I use VirtualDubMod. I am doing that part right. The problem I am having is the .vob is choppy, it skips around a little. Out of 5 .vob's only 3 of them ran smooth the others where choppy. How can I fix that?

1. you should have used virtualdubmod in order to convert to avi.
2. why are you concerned with vob playback if you have an avi file ready?

use the AVI file for editing or watching (also make sure you're using an appropriate codec), not the VOB file.

You do not "burn" things onto a hard drive.

"Burning" is the process of writing data onto removable optical media - literally "burning" data into the optical disc.
"If someone feels the need to 'express' himself or herself with a huge graphical 'singature' that has nothing to do with anything, that person should reevaluate his or her reasons for needing said form of expression, possibly with the help of a licensed mental health practitioner."

Thanks for that but what about the real problem I posted about? Please note that I know the difference between burning and ripping just was in a hurry when I was typing. Anyway how can I make the video stop chopping up. to define choppy for everyone it will repeat the video for 2-3 seconds aswell as the audio.

Since it looks like you don't get what downwithpants tells you, I ask you a question: Are the AVI's that you make from the choppy vob's choppy too?

If not, why care at all? But if they are, I'd rip again the 2 vob's in question. Take care that ripping is the only process that runs on your PC while doing that. Don't work in other programs.

When I rip the DVD to my hard drive it is a choppy .vob file. There was one I took in Virtualdubmod and went and cleaned it up but it would be nice if I didnt have to do that.

It might depend on the specs of your computer. I had a p2 333 that couldn't play DVDs even if it was OC'd a billion times over. My 1 ghz box plays them, but they're choppy, and my p4 3 ghz lappy plays them flawlessly. The lappy can barely handle uncompressed and HuffYUV footage, since that is what I'm assuming you converted it to since it plays choppy. And here's a tip, although it's an extra step that is VERY worth it. AVISynth. Not only will it look cleaner and a tad smoother, but you can get rid of INTERLACING. VOB -> AVI just compresses it and makes it easier to use, but can look really bad (I've done this).

Maybe it depends on the source, but I made the opposite experience. Open the vob file in VDubMod, using the VDubMod filters/pull down removal and save the compressed file gave me much better results than any thing I tried with AviSynth. Even if I simply frameserve the file, without any filters, it looks like shit compared to if I open the vob directly in VDubMod.
