Jewel-case Artwork Solicited

Post by remsleep » Wed Aug 10, 2005 3:17 am

Graphic Design is not my strong point ;-)

In a month or so, I'll be putting an AMV Compilation DVD up for download, and I think it would be great if I could also post some jewel-case fold-outs that people could also download. (or I guess even a full-size case image, it's up to the creator).

This project isn't really for us website members, however, it's more for your friends who might be even a little techno-phobic. To get the video listing, you need to check out the lead-in video (which I finally completed last weeked):

http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... hp?v=83903

(The DVD version doesn't have the live-action part or the final credits)

Although nothing is absolutely required, it would be fitting if the artwork contains some kind of reference to a-m-v.org and supplied the video listings. One fact that is not in the above video is that the final four AMVs presented individually are in a category called "Classics". Also, sneaking in something like "a studio twenty something compilation" could be good ;-)

Thank you to anyone willing to contribute!

Erm... not to be a stickler for ethics... but do the editors in this video know you used their videos to put this thing together?

Anyway, regarding the graphics... can we assume 300dpi measurements for the jewel case?

Good point. Originally, this just started as a one-time private disc for a friend, but now that you mention it, I do want to avoid ethical grey-areas (even though most every AMV is in that grey area ;-) ).

Here's what I've decided, I'm going to put up a more detailed description (menus, the techninal info, etc..) on my website and contact creators. If anyone has concerns, I will do whatever I can to try to address them. I may need a couple days (the day job, you know ;-) ), but I'll post here when the pages are up.

Also, just in case I misrepresented myself, I'm not intending to distribute anything physically, just to relase the final ISO image since I thought others on a-m-v.org would be interested -- and then had the idea that some artists might like the idea of contributing jewel-case jackets (naturally with attribution on the download page).

So to finally answer your question, yes, 300dpi would be good (although I must admit I'm not an expert in the finer points of printing...)

Are you looking for multiple pages, and perhaps multiple creators contributing something, or are you just trying to find one artist to do the lot (whether it be a page style or one fold out).

Just as a quick reference. In 300dpi, you will get a similar size font printed as if you were printing something from a Word document (ie. a size 12 letter over the 300dpi picture will print out the same size comparing it to a document you typed up with a word processor).

Yes - multiple contributors. I was envisioning providing the downloader with all the options that people have contributed, and letting them chose which one they want. I'm not imposing a requirement, but I imagine the 4-square fold-out and the 6-square fold-out would be the likely inserts. For people willing to disassemble the case and insert a back cover, that's fine too...

As a reward for viewing this thread I'll give readers a sneak preview at the web pages I mentioned earlier. The descriptions aren't ready yet, but the screenshots of the category menus are up if you go directly to:

Again, in the form-vs-function world, these menus are definitely in the "function" category (did I mention I'm soooo not an artist?).

There actually pretty nice dude. Umm, I'm honestly quite interested, but I'm not sure yet on my availabilities. So my next question now is, do you have a deadline to meet?

Eh, I don't think you need to contact the creators for something like this. Maybe to let them know you used it and where they can get a copy if they are interested in it. Certainly not for permission though as long as you credit the editors and don't claim to have made the videos yourself, which I don't see you doing.

Especially since this is for a friend and not a commercial entity, for profit, or otherwise shady situation.

Since this is getting to look pretty professional though I might suggest having a disclaimer somewhere (possibly near the begining of the dvd intro video) that the dvd is not for sale and if someone purchases it then they were cheated.

OK. A description page is up. In the process of the brief dont-forget-this-is-going-to-NTSC paragraph, I decided I would post my little animation to measure television overscan for fun. (which of course took longer than expected...)

No actual deadline to meet, although I claimed "this summer", so I guess I have until Sep 21 or so... Also, the "this is free" disclaimer is in the plan, as you'll see --thanx

Finally an update!

I had misbehaving disks recently, among other things. But for those who were following this thread, I put up the little animated credit roll for the sentimental category on the web page (see previous post).

Although it's not quite as simple as duplicating the aex composition and replacing footage for the remaining rolls, they should go somewhat more quckly now that this first one is done.

I'm taking an extra day over Labor Day weekend, hoping to come close to wrapping up this project then.
