Having Trouble With WMP (Windows Media Player)

Before I begin, let me flat out say that I'm a complete noob but I've pretty much got the hang of things. I can download videos just fine but when WMP starts to actually play the file, I get these strange visual backgrounds and not the actual video. Can someone help me out please?

Download and install ffdshow, then try to play the videos. Tell us if it doesn't fix the problem.

Well, the audio works perfectly but I'm still not seeing the video. All I can see is a black screen while the music plays. Did I forget a certain part of the ffdshow file or do I need to adjust the WMP?

Hmm... what is the format of the videos you're trying to play? Is this problem with all videos, or just one or a few? I've never had a problem after installing ffdshow. What version of WMP do you use? You can check by opening WMP and going to Help --> About Windows Media Player. If it's lower than 8.0, you might want to upgrade.

If that doesn't work, maybe someone else can help.

I've upgraded to WMP 9 and I still can't get the video to work! The file is an .avi file and the video is "Hammer of Justice" by Dragonmaster Lou.
Would you mind trying to play it and see if you have any problems with it?
I'm pretty much stumped.

You might need to download an XviD codec. I don't think ffdshow comes with it (although I have a really old version).

There's a bunch of different versions listed here.

Koepi and Nic used to be the main people that were releasing versions but now I see this celtic_druid guy. My recommendation is to try the latest version and then go back to a previous version if it doesn't work. Or give up and take a nap and try again later.

Ok. I've almost got it. I just need to know what a CLJR codec is and where to find it, then I'll be all set.

that is a very odd codec

according to this site...on my screen... it is a cirrus logic codec...

though frankly I don't know wtf...I see no links about downloading such codec...

you have tried punching your monitor?

and...why would you say you need help with wmp and then type out windows media player...

Ummmmmm.......because I'm trying to be considerate to those who may be completely technologically inept. Believe me, I know a few people who fit the bill.
