Are we an endangered species?

As editors(amv editors), are the laws coming pretty close to trampling us? I'm wondering what we're going to do when shit hits the fan. I know this is a touchy topic, and I may expect some sort of negative reaction to this thread. I just want constructive feedback on this issue, what do you think about the uprising on copywrite laws and restrictions. It almost seems as if it's coming close to the time that there going to do something and people who care about this hobby are going to have to take drastic measures. As I've said many times before, AMVs give me more of a need to get DVDs and Music since they have captured my interest in certain songs and movs, and also give me more of a need to get dvds and music for source footage.

There's a lot of anime/music I've bought because of amvs, and if they do stop our ability to work with footage(like putting copy protection on processors) and attack our community of editors, I'll stop having such a thirst for getting DVDs, and that means less money coming out of my pocket, so I guess it's a win win. They wont have to deal with me copying there precious DVDs, and I wont have to be spending money on there products.

As far as the Anime Liscensing companies are concerned, It's free advertising... I don't think there's any more of a push to stop AMVs now then there was 2 or 3 years ago. Once you own something it's sorta covered by fair use or whatever, so the only possible problem i could invision is with contests being pressured to cancel.

The only thing you could do if you really think there would be a problem (which seems quite doubtful to me) is to make your opinions known to the people you fear will do this through letters (real letters, not email or online petition bullshit) that state your clear stance to boycott their product if need be.

If the animem companies wanted to shut us down, they would have a long time ago. Like Basher said, they like us for the most part, it's free advertising.

You guys obviously did not read the link, this has nothing to do with anime companies.

I honestly think this is kind of unlikly. but this goes far beyond AMV's, TCPA would essensially destroy computing as we know it. Not only would there be no more CD or DVD ripping, there would be no DVD2AVI, no Virtualdub, no freeware at all. Programing would be pointless without gobs of money to certify it.

As for AMV's: Two VCR's anyone?

I didn't remember saying that has to do with anime companies. I'm more worried about just general copy write laws being more inforced, and actions by the RIAA, etc.. There's all kinds of attempts to stop us from doing what we do, even check updated info on doom9.org for more info. There's been a lot of drastic measures on this lately, even more drastic than it was before, I mean there putting piracy protections on chips, and there even making it so you can't record data streams from digital television. If there going to be taking these constant drastic measures on taking away the ability to use fair use, should we also be taking drastic measures as well?

I read an article about Big Brother putting copyright protection imbedded inside ALL CPUs for future generations and it make me fucking sick to my stomach.

I'm terrified of things like that happening. I honestly just try to ignore it as much as I can. I sign the petitions, put my name down, tell them my address, and then try to forget it as soon as possible. The powerful people in the world are doing a lot of terrible things right now and its unhealthy to dwell on it. I have way more important things to do, like get a job.
