I never did get the whole "lets put it all in one tiny bity box so no one can upgrade and must buy all new computers" part of the macs. I'm sure more people would like them if you could actually upgrade a mac, rather then go out and buy a new one. (yes I know, you can proly do all the simple upgrades like bigger hard drive/ more memory, but what if I want to upgrade the motherboard, proccessor, video card, add more firewire slots, get a bigger moniter?)

But isn't that true with Dell's or anything else premade? Or at least as far as the warranty goes. Ive seen quite afew Dells were they "try" to stop you from tampering with it.

No matter how you look at it the self made is the best. Its always cheaper and more powerfull. Too bad you can't build your own mac. :(

I know plenty of Mac users and even they reluctently admit that the whole Mac fad was (and still is) based (at least in part) on price-eliteism. That is, they cost more, so they must be better. For a long while many high-end macs outpreformed premade systems made by any PC manufacturer, but in the last few years the majority of the mac crowd is comprised of anti-microsoft people who don't want to go the linux route, those who still believe that paying twice as much for essentially the same spec-ed hardware is worthwile, and those who buy macs because others in their family have always bought macs (the majority of people i know). I know there is still a bit of an edge in mac hardware/software if you're willing to pay a large sum of money for it (or have a grant), but macs are slowly becoming less appealing to the average consumer.

I find that hard to believe with the prices of some of the computers out there these days, especially when you throw in tech support, software bundles, etc. ... :?

Not that that's going to stop me from building my own, of course.

What I dont get about macs is why theirs such a misconseption that they're some sort of gods when it comes to video, image and audio editing. Sure they've got a few high end apps, but windows has a wider range of similar apps which are at least as powerfull as their mac equivalents. Software is also a fair bit mre expensive for macs. Shake is the most prohobitively priced piece of software I've ever heard off.

Consoles? Most people arent computer geeks so unless they felt that after 5 years it should be time to clean the dust out, most people dont have any valid reason for opening up and messing around with a computers insides.

Alot of companies do things like solder on the parts and other tricks to stop you from upgrading the box. However my first comp (compaq 5000, 128sdr, 1ghz athlon, 20gb hdd) came with an agp slot, two unused pci's and 3 total ram slots. I was able to upgrade every component except the cpu before I finaly god a new mobo. I still use the case.

Despite what you may hear, it is possible to upgrade prefabs, I mean, they have to make money on machines they've alreay sold somehow. They do allow you to upgrade the proccessor, memory, video card(sometimes, if you paid for an AGP slot), hard drive ect. only probem is that they design thier mobos to fit exclusively inside the cases, so you can't upgrade that, and the BIOS is designed to only take certain kinds of upgrades (I.E. the expensive ones) for instance memory. Single sided memory is cheap and easy to get ahold of, while double sided is more espensive. guess what kind Dell's only take?
