Want to make an AMV TV show, but I need opinions on this.

Post by Chaos Angel » Tue Sep 17, 2002 10:19 pm

I am thinking of starting a music video TV show with my campus' student-run TV station. The twist is, I would like to show AMVs instead of normal music videos (of which the station has plenty of).

I was inspired by a music video on one of our filler tapes that someone at the station editted with a combination of live footage and Akira. Our production manager says that as long as we don't show the entire series or movie, the AMVs should be fine legally as long as we put up a shit-load of disclaimers (all copyrights are held by their respective owners, not us, etc.)

However, before I put in the official proposal, I wanted to see what kind of response I would get to the following question. I also intend to e-mail specific creators individually about this, unless of course they happen to answer here, but here is what I am wondering.

While I could use VirtualDub to size the videos up to the 720x480 broadcast aspect ratio, I have seen for myself that this can cause blurriness and general loss of video quality. So, my question is this: If I were to ask for one of your videos, who out there would be willing to snail mail me a CD, DVD, VCD, whatever, on which you have burned a copy of one or more of your music videos, sized at 720x480, and encoded in a format that won't make Premiere choke up, so we can dub it to a video tape? I figure, if you make the copy yourself, you will have the final say in quality of the video. I say snail mail because my Hotmail account won't hold more than 1 MB of info, my website only has 100MB of storage, and that's if I delete EVERYTHING currently on it. I am willing to meet up on AIM, or a Direct Connect hub, however, if that is preferable.

Right now, I just want to see what the response is, who would be willing to re-encode their videos in a workable format, or who wants me to just do what little I can to re-encode them (I will try to keep the quality as good as I can). Later, if the response is good, I will e-mail specific creators about their specific videos. If anyone would like to volunteer one or more of their videos, I'll give it a view and see if I want to show it (Note: No RealMedia files, please. RM does not want to work for me, it just freezes up my computer when I try to open a RM file).

Thanks in advance!!

The anime companies may not complain, but you'd still have to pay royalties on the music - and the music companies may not authorize you to broadcast anything which may "reflect their company in a bad light" (read: they didn't get paid to make).

Personally, I wouldn't want anything I make to be a part of it. I don't want to have to worry about the legal repercussions.
"If someone feels the need to 'express' himself or herself with a huge graphical 'singature' that has nothing to do with anything, that person should reevaluate his or her reasons for needing said form of expression, possibly with the help of a licensed mental health practitioner."

Well, I plan to look more into the legal aspects of it once I see whether it would feasibly work or not. The production manager says it would be ok, and I assume she knows what she is talking about, but I plan to do my own personal research once I see that it would be feasible.

I for one would be happy to resize "The Reason Why", (my only vid so far), and have you air it on your show, (assuming it's all legal). However, the original copy I had died along with my last hard drive, so unless I re-ripped all the footage from my DVDs, and basically redid everything, I wouldn't be able to remaster it very easily. Unfortunately I don't have that kind of time to spend on an AMV I've already made once. You're more than welcome to use the one that's on my website though, loss of quality be damned! :)

What happened to your idea to have an anime show on your campus? I'm guessing that died out, or are you thinking of alternatives incase it doesn't work out?

Never heard back from Pioneer. It's been a few weeks, I'm thinking they aren't going to bother with me. Oh, well.

 I doubt that I'm one of the select few creators that you have in mind for your project, But I think it's a hell of a idea. It would be a amazing step for amvs and anime. In my little area of the world anime is still just a cult following, With only a few people to talk to and still having to drive a hour to a hour and a half to get any dvd's that aren't shown on ctn or fox over and over again. Kinda fusterating ... But to simply know that anime's following is growing to the point of having a small chunk of time on the tv's airwaves. That alone could keep me happily going while I to spread anime to my little corner of the world. Sorry I rambled on like that, but i do think it's a hell of a idea.

:D
It's all in the eye of the beholder...nahhh, it's all in the eyes of the creator.

I have three anime music videos I'd be willing to send you if you can get around the legal factor:

One Day

Let it Make Me Strong

In My Arms Again

Give them a download and see if you like them or not. If yes, just drop me an e-mail asking me to sign on AIM. I already have high-resolution divx files (about 150 MB each) on my computer, so I don't have to do any re-encoding or anything and I can just send them away.

I think I heard somewhere that if you have voice-overs in your videos it's less legal to show them, since it kind of gives away a part of the series, and both my Oh My Goddess videos used voice-overs... I don't know if that will matter or not but I thought I should make a note of it...
