Does anyone ask if Family guy is art?
Not paticularly... Sure it's animation. Sure it's got great songs.

But no one cares because it's entertaining.

Family Guy is in a league of its own 8-)

Writing is an art, directing is an art, and original creation. Art is many many things and is most definitely hard to describe.

Quote:
"Arthur Danto, professor of philosophy at Columbia University ..., believes that today "you can't say something's art or not art anymore."
wikipedia wrote: "Art, in its broadest meaning, is the expression of creativity or imagination, or both"

"Characteristics of art

1. Requires creative perception both by the artist and by the audience
2. Elusive
3. Communicates on many levels and is open to many interpretations
4. Connotes a sense of ability
5. Interplay between the conscious and unconscious part of our being, between what is real and what is an illusion
6. Any human creation which contains an idea other than its utilitarian purpose.
7. That which is created with intention to be experienced as art"

"Communicating emotion

Art appeals to human emotions. It can arouse aesthetic or moral feelings, and can be understood as a way of communicating these feelings. Artists have to express themselves so that their public is aroused, but they do not have to do so consciously. Art explores both human emotions and ways to arouse them — and good art brings something new and original in either of these two respects."
90% of the world wide web has definitions complete opposite of yours, and even professional artists have quoted against the perception you bring, yet you still act like your understanding of art is more correct than others. Art is very Elusive, and to say you KNOW what it is makes you seem close minded.

Ok I'm done arguing. I'm sick of arguing with someone who generalizes everything.

You missed my point entirely, and are just quoting things to try to make your opinion seem more valid, even though it has nothing to do with what I'm saying.

How entertaining.
"If someone feels the need to 'express' himself or herself with a huge graphical 'singature' that has nothing to do with anything, that person should reevaluate his or her reasons for needing said form of expression, possibly with the help of a licensed mental health practitioner."

Am I the only one here who found that terribly funny?

On topic:

IMHO, Art should be a adjective.

Its like "Good". You may think something is Good. Someone else might not. I believe the same applies to Art.

but makes sure they match.. Thinks about the phyical actions of
those charcters and how to best use them, More FX

Keywords: Impact, Flash,Timing,Wow Factor
the two aren't at all exclusive. i treat lyrics, storytelling, beat-timing, synch, and effects with the respective weights i consider appropriate. i use both lyrics and musical rhythm as cues for the presentation, often simultaneously. i have seen many videos do the same.

am i an artist? the general definition would entail creating or performing art as a profession (not creating/performing art in general - that would include almost the entire human population), which would exclude me. so by the general definition - no. by otakuforlife's definitions, i'm both an amv artist and an amv creator.

is amv editing art? certainly.

except architecture and cooking are also arts.

Remember folks, all art and all otherwise creative works are derivative. Nothing, ever, is 100% original. It doesn't work like that. As a whole, we're just a bit more honest about it.

Anyway, I usually refer to people as 'editors', since that's the best description for some random person to grasp. I'm of the opinion that 'artist' is more a state of mind than anything else. The same applies to 'creator'.

I would consider myself an artist, even by the standard that nothing is created when making an AMV (which I would debate). I'm a creative person; I like creating things plain and simple. Whether its AMVs, sketches on paper, writting, poetry, rythyms that I drum on my stomach, scenerios that I think of in my head while I listen to music, it doesnt matter. I enjoy creating things, so that = "artist" in my mind.
Beo is one of my favorite artists and one of the greatest WWE champions.

As for me... call me an artist or whatever you feel like. I see myself simply as an editor or dare I say "creator" (which is an odd word)... Art is in the eye of the beholder and trying to define it is next to impossible thanks to the lack of agreement among people as to what constitutes art. When hell freezes over maybe we'll get some kind of closure... until then the only person to determine if something is art or not is yourself.

I like how all the big guys here like to sound like they know what they're talking about. Art is the lazy act of reproducing a certain perspective. Keyword: PERSPECTIVE. THAT'S ALL. If some guy in New York can have a sculpture of cow organs in a musuem, cartoons mixed with tunes can be considered an ART.
