Post by Akashio » Fri Jun 17, 2005 2:15 pm

Can someone help me discover and fix my slow startup problem?

I have:

Radeon x800 series
1 GB ram
and so on...

Your computer speed doesn't really play that large a role in how fast you boot up. How long is it taking? You may want to go into 'msconfig' and reduce the number of programs you have in your startup.

I love watching bootup races. People actually build PCs to have fast bootup times. Most of the time they have to modify Windows Boot up procedures, but I've seen PCs bootup Windows XP in 8 seconds flat.

It takes about 4 minutes. How do I access this msconfig?

I went into msconfig and have disabled over two thirds of the services and startup processes, but I still have a boot up time of about 2+ minutes.

However, my friend has a Dell Dimension 4600 (2.8Ghz P4, crap everything else...) and his computer boots up in about 20 seconds. It's just not fair.

I was wondering if the process, SCANINICIO (which is a process my Panda Anti-virus software executes to scan the boot sector of my disk and my memory at startup to check for viruses that try and load and act before my anti-virus is fully operational.), is in any way responsible. Please help me! MY BOOTUP TIME SUCKS!

Get LavaSoft AdAware and run a scan - if you have a lot of spyware it'd affect your startup time.

A good deal of boot speed comes from harddrive speed. Defrag and stuff, and make sure too much crap isnt loading on startup.

Mine takes a while to boot because it initialises the RAID card just after the BIOS, so it's kinda like sitting through the BIOS twice but since the performance is great I don't care how long it takes to boot. Once it's on it's on, and usually for an extended time.

You could try analyzing the logs in the Event Viewer and maybe use BootVis to narrow down to the source, though that'd require some time.

Otherwise just post all the enabled services & startup progs here maybe someone could figure it out.

Lavasoft Adaware is great, and Degrag, Disk Clean and Error-Check are good apps to run every now and then. Another program that might help is Spybot - Search and Destroy. In the tools window you can customize your startup apps, much the same as msconfig. But, Spybot gives you a lot more details of what they do so you might have an easier time picking and choosing what you do or don't need. Is also another good program for keeping adware off your system.
