FUNimation DVD Subtitles

Are they really bullshit subtitles? I heard that they have none of the original swearing and it's pretty much the english dialogue pasted onto the japanese text.

Um.....right....

Most DVDs by FUNimation has two subtitle tracks: one that's an English dubtitle track, and the second one has the direct Japanese translation. I wish more companies does that.

One scenario I can think up of is that if you want to watch an English dubbed anime series with a deaf person, you probably want to put up the English dubtitles so you and the deaf person can enjoy watching the dubbed version. That way you and the deaf person can enjoy watching the dubbed version without worrying about any inconsistances with the subtitles.

I say that's a good reason.

What I mean is are FUNimation's english subtitles that accurate with the japanese episodes they include on some of there dvds? I heard that they are known for leaving the swearing out...

maybe they do....I have a couple of movies from fundamation and they do leave out the swearing in it.

Actually, my sister bought the "UNCUT" version of Dragon Ball Gt's Lost Episodes...I saw no difference in the edited version. FUNimatioin is full of crap. The uncut version has no swearing and no blood at all. How can you actually call that uncut...unless they're talking about the japanese version...yeah they swear once or twice in each episode.

Uh, that's because... contrary to asinine fanboy belief... the characters in DBZ don't run around with ridiculously foul mouths, because it's a show aimed at children.

And FUNimation's "uncut" English dub has NEVER been marketed as an ACCURATE dub... they flat-out list in the ending credits that they're responsible for "reversioning" (that's their own word!) the show. They're very accurate about what they tell you... most fans just don't pay close-enough attention. The dub is their own reversioning of the show, where-as the original Japanese version is the true "uncut" version that's available to you.

The man that does the translations for the Japanese language subtitle track has been a fan for longer than many can fathom, and has a better grasp on the language than some native speakers. OK, so perhaps I hype him too much and easily over-embellish, but he does some of the most accurate work in the *entire* industry, and deserves WAY more respect and recognition than he's given.

Furthermore, it seems like a staggering number of people who watch DVDs don't understand how to set them up before watching them. Do yourself a favor and set the language/subtitle options through the menu, rather than pressing buttons on the remote. FUNimation's first subtitle track is generally (as noted) the "closed-captioning" subtitle track that corresponds to their English dub, where-as the second subtitle track is the literal translation for the Japanese audio track. Furthermore, especially for discs in the DB franchise, if you don't select things from the menu, the playlist will be weird and you probably won't get the Japanese opening themes if you want to watch the show in Japanese.
