Otakon 2005 Pre-screenings (UMCP)

Post by hackerzc » Mon Jun 20, 2005 8:48 am

As many are aware, every year Otakon receives far more AMV entries than can ever be shown in the normal contest. Due to this fact it is necessary to "pick and choose" which entries get to compete and which do not. To keep everything as fair as possible to everyone involved, it was decided that pre-screenings would be held each year before the convention where creators from around the area could come together to watch, rate, and review each entry in the contest. At the end, those videos receiving the top scores would then go on to compete in the main contest at the convention.

Once again, Otakon will be having Baltimore/D.C. area pre-screenings. The Terrapin Anime Society has been gracious enough to host this event at their facilities on the University of Maryland, College Park campus. Any creators willing to attend and give their input on the entries are welcome to attend.
The following are the dates and times (as well as basic directions) for the Baltimore/D.C. area pre-screenings.

Dates:
Saturday 7/9/05
Saturday 7/16/05
Saturday 7/23/05
Saturday 8/6/05

Times:
We will start at 10AM sharp each day, and run till about 4PM.
In the event we need some extra time to finish a tape up we have the room till 5PM.

Location:
University of Maryland, College Park campus; College Park, MD
Engineering Building (Martin Hall), Room 1202

Driving Directions:
http://www.cvs.umd.edu/visit/directions.html

There are a number of places near by to get something to eat if you wish to go out during the lunch break.
Also it is recommended you bring something to write with if you remember.

I look forward to seeing everyone there. If there are any questions please feel free to send me a personal e-mail any time: hackerzc@comcast.net

There were talks of having a prescreening in the midwest. Like in the Chicogo/St louis area... Can this still happen?

It hasn't been completely ruled out (or at least Antonio hasn't told me, "Sorry, too late to set one up now"). I didn't get a particularly large response when I asked about it on the Otakon AMV mailing list a little ways back- I guess I'll try again with a post here and see what kind of response it gets.

I'd definitely like to have a Mid-West prescreening, and there should be plenty of time in July to do it (given the last UMD prescreening is less than 2 weeks before the con itself). I just need to make sure there's the interest in it, and get the specifics of where to have it nailed down and make sure it meets with Antonio's approval so I can get the tapes & ballots for it.

All I ever heard of this was something a member posted to the contest mailing list. I never heard anything about it from Antonio yet (he really would be the one to ask about this as I'm sure he knows more). But like Ash said, I didn;t see much interest in it so far.

But guessing how far along we are in the contest, I don't se eit happening this year.
I contacted Antonio about it late last month, and he got back to me about 2 weeks ago that he'd like to try and make it happen if I could get it put together. I'm still trying to work out details- I want to have it where the most people would be able to attend conveniently- but I do still want to try and make it happen. I'd have to figure that as long as the ballots were sent in with enough time for you to tally them, it shouldn't be too late to do it- and since the last UMCP prescreening is on August 6th, if I can get it set up and done in mid-July there should be plenty of time.

I have submitted an amv into the contest, but if it's appropriate, I wouldn't mind helping out in any capacity.

Well, aside from going to one of the prescreenings there really is nothing I can think of. Honestly I wish there was more to do, cause I hate just sitting around.

Pre-screenings

Post by feqqr » Tue Jun 21, 2005 5:28 pm

Hey all,

I know Antonio and I have talked a bunch about the midwest screening Idea. I know we'd both really like to see it happen, but it was a question of interest and coordination. Keep in touch with him on it.

Also, Antonio should be posting tonight the information for this weekends NYC based screening.
