I for one am appalled by all the anti-mad sentiment expressed here. It is 100% fact, FACT I say, that even the worst MAD is better than the greatest AMV. The Japanese have been carefully bred to be genetically superior to all others. Those who do not convert their opinions should be put to death for such heresy.

I didn't tell you to shut up! I love a good MAD as much as the next guy, and I do recognize them as a separate genre. But there's no need for a MAD > All approachRurounikeitaro wrote: I knew either Paizuri, Otohiko, or dokool would tell me to shut up. Looks like it's dokool this time. Sorry I'm a Japan fanatic dude!

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Genre... doesn't quite sound right. Perhaps another classification would be more appropriate, but you get the ideaOtohiko wrote:

Needlessly obvious quote (yes, it's from the Gaijin Factory website - bolded emphasis mine):Rurounikeitaro wrote:Either way, if they actually used anime instead of pictures, it would still be hotter than most of the AMV's I've seen on this site.
"By far the 2 most interesting types of MADs today are Douga MADs and Seishiga MADs. Douga MADs are the equivalent of typical anime music videos. They consist of anime set to a song or music. Seishiga MADs on the other hand are "Still-picture MADs." These consist of still images (from a game, artbook, or other source) animated into video form."
And there are a few of them on a-m-v.org.
The difference, in my mind, is stylistic, and stylistic only. MADs are highly technical; AMVs are simplistic. It's not dictated by where you hail from, although MADs being from Japanese editors is almost universal. There are Japanese editors that have done straight AMVs (like Katsumi_AMVs / Paulo).

I'd use approach or type. Both MADs and AMVs are fan-produced anime-based videos with music. The difference is in the approach, largely.Otohiko wrote:Genre... doesn't quite sound right. Perhaps another classification would be more appropriate, but you get the ideaOtohiko wrote:

What if I prefer, say, old-school Disney, or old-school Warner Brothers, to recent anime? Your opinion is invalid because you sound like such a goddamned fanboy. I mean, I've lived in Japan and my opinion isn't nearly that slanted...Rurounikeitaro wrote:What are talking about? That's just like saying Cartoons and Anime are different styles. Consider this:
It is my understanding that many MAD editors admire AMVs and are incorporating ideas of storytelling, mood sych, and meaning into their work. Many AMV editors admire MADs and seek to incorporate advanced effects into their work.
Both comunities are moving towards each other by incorporating the strengths of the other.
I will be the first to admit I am biased because I tend to like effects that serve a purpose and alter the mood or even story of the anime (as in Whisper of the Beast for example) but I prefer AMVs because there are many genres of AMVs that do not really benefit from advanced effects. I see AMVs as being broader and incorporating more distinct styles and modes of expression.
You want effects? watch car commercials. Their effects leave ours in the dust. Most people watch AMV's for the meaning and emotional impact as well as the visual aesthetic.
