That being said, it might be helpful for you to take a look at this guide, but I guess it all depends. If you have raws at hand, my suggestion would be to use them. You could always go the subtitle-removal route, so just be aware that it'll be a little extra work. :)

If you have subtitles...you're gay :P
Since when? What's wrong with gays?
They're commonly made fun of by various asshats. Much as it is in the case of the subs...

Bottom line:

It's a sign of lazy editing. Lazy editing=bad editing marks, bad effort marks, bad visual quality marks; consequently bad re-view and overall marks. More generally, it means that since you don't seem to care for the video - the viewers will also be inclined to care somewhat less.

If you're interested in keeping your viewer interested and 'in' the video, and/or good opinions - cut the subs. Use good DVD footage or, if you can't, just do everyone including yourself a favour and cut out the subs like a man/woman.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

What's wrong with Viz DVDs? (Just wondering.)

Prince of Tennis is already out on R1 DVD?

Wait... is the anime even licensed?

Some of their releases have hard-coded subs for background songs and such. Had to deal with that when I was working with Video Girl Ai.

Otohiko has the gist of it.

If you leave stuff in that can easily be taken out, like the divx logo, subs, or that cartoon network logo, then people are going to feel like you didn't really put effort into making your video. Sometimes when you're new you'll get a 'little' slack for it, but it's always better to NOT have stuff that distracts from your video, in your video.

If you have to deal with hard subs... good luck, you can treat them just like fansubs, but it just means that there are going to be shots that you can't use because there is garbage on screen that'll take days to remove by hand.

So to aswer the letter of the question:

DVD>raws>fansubs>cartoon network >>hk.
Build a man a fire, and he will be warm for a night. Set a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

My entire Feel the Rhythm series of amvs I've made used nothing but digisubs. If you want to see how a digisub created amv can be made, I HIGHLY suggest viewing those.
"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)
"I AM REBORN!" - Dark Schneider Bastard!! OAV
