I would have to agree with Pwolf on this one, it has the potential to be extremely effective, but on the other hand, it can probably drive a video into the ground.
For example, take Otohiko's video "The Wasteland". I could definietly picture a long black screen sequence somewhere in there to add to the dark mood, but if you took a video like "Toushi" and slapped a black screen in for 30 seconds, I'd probably think there was some critical editing error that occurred...then I'd most likely chastise the editor with my home-made MS paint images.
If you have nothing to show, then don't show it?
