Kraftwerk - These guys pretty much invented techno in the 70's, so yeah, they're pretty important.
DAF - Early industrial music.
Einstürzende Neubauten - More early industrial music.
Atari Teenage Riot - Electronica meets political punk rock. Some of the angriest music I've ever heard. Lyrics are in English. Burn Berlin Burn is a much better album than 60 Second Wipeout.
Chicks on Speed - I just got Rereleases of the Unreleases a week ago, and it's just one of the wierdest albums I've ever heard. It's like a cross between Le Tigre, Suicide, and Blectum From Blechdom (if you're familiar with any of those bands). It's incredibly fun, if you can get past the fact that music can be good without being technically flawless and glossy.
Johann Sebastian Bach - A relatively obsucre musician that no one seems to know much about. Probably didn't amount to much anyway.
Drop me some German music artists...

Rammstein. Go for Rammstein. Engel, Tier, Alter Mann, and Hallelujah are some of my favorites.
Chou Ryuuen, of the Fushigi Yuugi Cabal

piling on......
In Extremo -- minstrel music meets nu-metal. really good, actually, like Rammstein with bagpipes. I'm not lying about this "good" part here, no matter how it sounds; _Suende ohne Zuegel_ frickin' rocks. Most songs in German, some in Latin, Old Irish, Norse, etc.
Kreator
Destruction
Sodom -- the Big Three of German thrash. Kind of like early Slayer/Testament, but different in their own ways.
Helloween -- originators of power metal. Be careful; nothing they've done since 1988 (or whenever Keeper part 2 came out) is remotely relevant. Kai Hansen (mainman of Gamma Ray) started this band, then quit around then.
Boese Ohnkelz -- punk/metal, very underground, kind of controversial, been around for next to forever.
Morwen -- really undergound, kind of like Black Sabbath with female vocal. Songs in English.
Angel Dust -- power metal that hits you between the eyes. _Bleed_ was a great album, and most say they've been getting better since.
that's all I can think of now.
tchuss,

Shin Hatsubai is a Premiere-free studio. Insomni-Ack is habitually worthless.
