What I see in this thread are a few people making assertions about a chat that they are nearly unfamiliar with.
To set the record straight, swearing in itself isn't strictly prohibited, but couple that with trolling or flaming and you've got a problem.
Warnings have indeed been issued for regulars who discussed where to obtain downloadable music, anime, etc. I have never seen someone making these types of things available without being reprimanded.
Very few of the regulars engage in spam - those that have in the past have been notified to cease just like anyone else.
And frankly, the assertions regarding cronyism are quite unfounded. In over a year of being in the chat, I have seen perhaps two people receive preferential treatment, and this was at the very beginning of that period.
The problem is, many people hear one or two of their friends complain about things, and then automatically accept their claims as true when they have never witnessed this firsthand nor are provided with proof. Hearsay is simply no basis for indignation.

As a non-practicing OP of the IRC channel, I really don't see what all the fuss is about. From all the banninations that I have seen, they were conducted in a fair manner, with no favoritism. Heck some of my FRIENDS have been banned from the channel, but I can understand why. The channel does have written rules, which are not enforced by nazi robots, they are enforced by people. As such, every situation is handled on a case by case basis. Many factors play into this. Probably the most important factor is who is actually there at the time something occurs. Other factors are how the offending person is acting. If someone breaks a rule, starts showing utter disrespect and talking back and crap, of course a moderator is going to be harder on him than someone who breaks a rule, then realises that they have done something wrong, and is appologetic.

As far as having hand-picked mods that are all some circle of friends, I can definately say that that is NOT the case. Most of the original mods were chosen simply because they used IRC and would hang around the channel. Other mods were chosen later simply because they had conducted themselves in a good manner and were active in the channel at times when other mods weren't.

Overall, the irc channel is a fun and entertaining place, and people are RARELY banned or reprimanded. I honestly can't even remember the last time someone was banned. Even when people are banned, after a time there is often discussions as to whether to allow them back. I can say with all honesty that things there are conducted in the most fair manner possible.

That's my gripe... as fair as possible within the realm that IRC can allow. :?

I'll also mention that I'm not such an arrogant asshole that I'm beyond apology [That line is especially for you, Bum... acting like the damn prodigal father around here.] This isn't about me getting back into IRC. This is about the whole damn system needing revision. A constitutional monarchy is still a monarchy. Fuck, now political philosophy's gonna come into play. I understand the system isn't run by mindless tyrants. The system itself is what I've been getting at the whole time. Even AD acknowledges the flaws inherent in IRC, but he insists on keeping it as the standard. Unless the nature of IRC changes, my arguement won't. I stand firm on this issue.

Then I think we are at an impasse here because I don't see any alternatives to IRC being suggested.

This is because the "alternative" of unmoderated chats are unreasonable to you.
