There might be a more efficent way to do this, but if I really like the song (or the particular mix used) I just open the file in a video editor (I use Premiere), delete the video track, and output the sound file as a wave, and then convert it to an MP3.

Open the file in VirtualDubMod.
In VDM 1.5.x, go to the Streams menu --> Stream List, select the audio stream (there's usually only one), and click Demux.
In VDM 1.4.x, the equivalent function is somewhere on the Audio menu.

Doing that is entirely superfluous as Vdubmod doesn't actually decode to wav, so you can just rename the file *.mp3 and it should work fine

It depends on whether you have "Direct stream copy" or "Full processing mode" set for the audio stream to be processed.

If "Direct stream copy", then yes, the stream isn't recompressed (same as the "Demux" option I suggested above), and you have an MP3 stream in a .WAV container.

If "Full processing mode", then it depends on what compressor you selected.

WMA: Free

Load a video into WMM2 and drag all the video clips, in order, to where the music goes. Save movie file or export, and then use a converter progam to make it an mp3.
