Unless I'm doing an opinion exchange, I only give opinions when I feel that the video deserves an opinion, regardless of how old it is. In other words your video has to be really impressive or really horrifying (horrible) for me to give an opinion.

I like ops, I think that people shoudl leave them, and I wish I left a lot more than I did. However, a lot of peopel these days say "There's no point in leaving opinions anymore because all the numbers are screwed up by people giving all 10's just because they like Naruto and it's a Naruto video, etc..." - But honestly, isn't leaving an Op more about feedback tothe author, NOT about a numbers contest and gettign into the top 10%.
I used to strive to get into the top 10%, but now I don't think it matters anymore, because of all the idiot fanboys/girls out there that rate irresponsibly. However, I still love feedback, and I like to see what people think of my videos.
My only wish is that I had the option to ditch idiot ratings from my vids... like the ones where people will give all 1's, under good put "nothing" under bad put "Everything" and under comments put "Fruits Basket Sucks, so does linkin park" - crap like that.
Anyway, I encourage everyone to op videos, especially mine

What you say about the fanboys is quite true and i agree that the feedback is way more important than the numbers. (Ive havent been here long enough to actually have experienced the noninflated op values but i can only imagine how nice they must be. I mean a 5 actually meaning the vid is average... good god, who woulda thunk it.
Actually, it mite solve a lotta probs if they separated scores from amv makers and non amv makers. hmmm...

Excellent points.
Yumi + Chan I do agree. I do tend to look to see how many opinions a vid receives when I download it.
Rubyeye really put in a way I understand. I like a lot of older movies and music.
You guys are right fanatic music and anime fans render the numbers a little ineffective.
Time Frame:
I think it is important to review the video in terms of its time frame.
If it was made when vids were a few megs with bad quality it is unfair to ream them on quality. For the time it may have been awesome quality.
I think people do tend to give Ops to really good and really bad vids.
Speaking of which I have a few of both to do. A good one to Azumanga to Hammerfall and the worst splice job to a Gun N' Roses song ever. I wish people did not figure out how to do that. Nobody does it right or appropriately. Put a giant hiccup in Knockin' on Heavens Door and get a flogging.
After all the research I have done I now sometimes wonder if the knowledge in the guides comes to easy to new vid editors. Its all the tech knowledge without the artistic understanding. It seems to lead to vids with large files sizes from quality sound and image, but terrible construction. Not to mention all the WMV.
I am sorry to say I can't always leave an opinion as I am rather long winded about it. I give a lot of advice. Before anyone says how can you give advice your vid suck I must say I have not posted any of my new ones. Hell I don't even use a timeline editor anymore.
I'll have to go back and write some opinions now.

But yeah, as an editor, I appreciate ops on my older stuff just as much as ops on my newer stuff.
As a reviewer,... well, I've only ever left 6 ops, so.

This actually has to do with a point on opinions so tough it out to the bottom.
Alright Scintilla I admit you have skill. I'll have to download it and see when I get the chance, but I image you would get it right.
But the point still stands that easy knowledge makes for little wisdom.
The only time I change a song is to take out the beginning blank feed that buffers between two songs on an album. My credits or a completely blank pause can serve that purpose.
That aside I just think changing the original vision of the artist is disrespectful. I have seen way too many horrid speed changes, splices, and normalization til the song soulds like speaker is under water.
Not to mention the use of 4 to 24 band equalizers on the sound. That was good in the days of records and early cassettes, but now I just don't know. CDs get processed by a room full of equipment with 200+ band equalizers by a professional. I think that is plenty.
Anyway I'm not going to name names, but come on. Knockin on Heavens Door is a very long powerful heartfelt song.
This guy butchered it at 2:40. Granted it was an accident really. But if your not going to do a video right, what is the point? Or least don't inflict it upon a hoping public.
The poor song didn't deserve such. It just gets started when it cuts off.
That said I will admit it was the guys first video so I'll give him that much of a break. He has gotten a lot better since then and he did try. Its just a matter of the tech as a crutch to art. He got it in the second video, which does pretty damn good. More like a fourth of fifth video.
Its an art. I like to give opinions to those that achieve a vision or at least had the concept of a vision evident in the video. I just don't see AMVs as some mere lacky fan tribute.

We're artists, in a sense. We're here and doing this because we have our own visions. Visions that may or may not coincide with those of the original artists.HeavyMetal wrote:That aside I just think changing the original vision of the artist is disrespectful. Yes, AMV editing is an art form. One where the product is more than the sum of its parts. Our visions are not always going to coincode with those of the original artists or animators. That's not a problem, part of the art lies in manifesting your vision despite those problems.HeavyMetal wrote:Its an art.
