Gundam Wing: "Oh look at me, I have a mech! I also have emotional issues/a-vendetta/a-need-for-revenge and such as well"
Rurouni Kenshin / Samurai X "See: Beserk (Minus a really big sword. Replace with really, really sharp one)"
Don't feed people the line of crap that because it's American, it's crap and because it's Japanese it's "unique".
Few stories on either side are unique. It's the presentation and style that matter.
