An important decision regarding dramatic execution.

Post by OmniStrata » Sun Mar 27, 2005 3:04 pm

Yes, I'm gonna try another dramatic anime music video!

*shudder*

One of the lyrics in the song says, "it may sound absurd" [that should give you an idea of what song I'm using, please don't blurt it out]

I normally make vids that make one feel better after viewing but this may be my first heart moving, or heart breaking amv.

During the mentioned lyric, to 'liven things' a bit, would it work to use a cute sd/humourous moment for that lyric? Or should I just go 100% emotional? I don't know if anyone has done this before or if it's advised against but have there been vids that really moved your heart though there where some cute/funny bits to them? :?

"I AM REBORN!" - Dark Schneider Bastard!! OAV

Well, I don't know. First of all it depends on what the anime is - sometimes SD is just too cute. For drama vids I find that using characters crying or some kind of emotional outburst always works (if that's the kind of drama I'm going for). To offset that, show characters smiling or  .

Any other tips?

I'd consider it "risky".

It could work, but you also face the prospect of snapping viewers completely out of the mood of the video, and ruining it.

Most likely, straight drama would keep things in the groove for a greater number of viewers.

Perhaps the best way to decide, is to at least rough in that clip, and another more serious one, and make a couple low/medium quality exports, which you can view against one another, and/or send to a few trusted friends to get thier input on which works better.

I'm too out of touch to have any idea what song or anything you're using, not much more I can think of to say that might be any use, except good luck, I'm a fan of your vids, and I'll be cheering for you to kick ass on this project.

Avatar come from the cover of the up-coming (hentai) anime,Square Of The Moon.

I will say one other thing, and it's something I'm learning from watching "live action" music videos ... Don't focus too much on precise visual/lyrical association. If you have a scene that works well to emphasis a particular verse or chorus, work it in a way so it flows naturally with the scenes before and after. With drama videos in particular, you are trying to convey emotions through some kind of narrative.

Don't worry so much on trying to find some kind of image as directly described by the lyrics. You're audience will naturally "read" whatever message or emotions the video is conveying with the help of the music. I agree with FurryCurry, best to work it as a straight drama.

Good luck.

However, out of curiosity - why a forum thread, and not a beta handed out to people? It's usually easier to judge that sort of thing after watching the way the rest of it goes.

If you ask me, the line is followed quickly enough by more serious lyrics that breaking character and then getting back into it wouldn't be easy to do smoothly.

There was an Otakon-winning drama video to this song a while back (that, if what I've heard is right, caused a bit of unrest when it won) that was able to successfully add humorous bits into what was otherwise a pretty heartstring-tugging video, but the visuals for those bits weren't blatantly humorous -- just some shameless lyric synch, you know, it's like that.

Forum thread because...
I was wondering if people did it before? ^_^ Handing out betas of what I'm trying to do won't tell me if people have tried this before and ended up with good/bad results.

That and my ability to transfer files is soley through ftp. ;_;
I'm just gathering info, nothing harmful I hope...
