Not a regular Opinion Question
I need some advice as I'm a n00b at this place.
Now I know some of you have ran into this problem before. You see great videos, ok videos and well..... So I watched two certain videos, not great, but the editors have potential to become great, so I wanted to give some constuctive critisizm......until I went onto view there opinions.....and guess what......they had all nines and tens.....I'm pretty easy going in my opinions but averaged out one would have had about a 6 and the other 6.5.
So what do you guys do??? Cause to me, I'm thinking they don't even want to improve, thats my impression.

This is a situation that has a fair number of people bothered. The existing rating system has suffered from "average creep" for a long time, I can't tell you exactly why, as I've been more or less absent from the site for more than a year.
My own solution has been to give up on opinionating videos, or taking any I get serously except for the comments, because scoring them according to the indicated guidelines, or too honestly, tends to cause a lot of hate from the person whose overall score you just lowered.
Certain things have improved to the point the scores are nearly meaningless unless something is fairly wrong with the amv, like sound quality. And just how the hell are you supposed to rate something like "effort", unless the creator admits they could have done better, or you know the body of their work well enough to know they didn't try their hardest? Again, the problem with an enraged reviewee.
I, at least, don't have any good answers for you, except to say don't worry about it, you aren't obligated to review a video just because you downloaded and watched it.

Very sound advice from both of you. Thank you.

I think thats what I'll do.Leave an opinion with constructive criticism anyway.
Perhaps link them to other, better videos that illustrate your points.

Quantifying any kind of opinion is easy to interpret as "good" or "bad". The scale system is just a summary of your impression of the video. The real heart of any review is what you write about it. Don't worry about the numb3rs, if you think any of those attributes deserves a 6, then it deserves it. But explain and critique what you thought about it - the technical and/or the aesthetic aspect of the piece. How you felt about it. Things like that. That's really what most of us look forward to anyway ... reading what other people have to say, not counting numb3rs.

Well if my opinion is lower then 3 points of their average, I won't leave an opinion, as they are obviously not interested in hearing it anyways.LuluandAuron wrote:I think thats what I'll do.Leave an opinion with constructive criticism anyway.

Wow, this just came up in another thread. I thought someone was being too harsh on his ops for my AMV. He said that my AMV was not bad and that he has given all 1's across the board before! I have never given anyone a 1 in any category, much less all 1's. On the other hand, I have never given all 10's nor all 9's and 10's- and thus have had complaints about my giving 6's when everyone else gave 9's for a certain AMV.
I do think it is unfair in both directions to give undeservedly high or low scores. I would get skeptic if someone gives me all 10's: even if I made a video of their fave song by their fave band to their fave anime using scenes they love, I still know my editing is not master style. On the other hand, I do get severely discouraged if I get low scores- especially if they are inflammatory ("this video is torture") and do not offer explanations (such as "I honestly do not like this genre of music/anime" or "Your editing is too choppy and your footage too pixellated"). I do love high scores, high stars, and positive opinions. But I do not blame you for being a little suspicious if someone gives you 10s across the board with the simple explanation of "FMA rocks! Beethoven rocks! Fades and irises rock!" or the sort.

I just tell them right away that I'm a hard marker, and to expect lower marks than the rest of their reviews. So far, I haven't had any complaints. If the videos you're giving are made by someone who understands constructive criticism, then the scores don't matter. If all they care about is the score, then they'll never be happy anyway.
So I would just keep doing what you're doing. The org needs more honest people regarding opinions.

Just to note, not everyone with high scores actually asked for them. In fact I'd guess that most with them haven't. I know in my own case the few straight 10 ops I've recieved were totally unsolicited and the ops I actually value were one with indepth comments regardless of what the scores were. Just because the average score is high on a video don't assume the creator isn't interested in hearing your feedback.LuluandAuron wrote:Well if my opinion is lower then 3 points of their average, I won't leave an opinion, as they are obviously not interested in hearing it anyways.
Of course, I've quit giving ops because I got tired of some people bitching about me giving low scores even though I specifically warned of that when offering my op. So take this for what it's worth, words from someone who was in your position and decided it just isn't worth the hassle.
