why does everyone seem to hate dubs?

I try not to think about this a lot. All I'll say is, I really enjoy dubs, when the actors actually express some talent.

Evanelion dubs DO suck...

I liked their dub a lot. But once again its all preferences!

Spike Spencer (Shinji) and Tiffany Grant (Asuka) are two of the finest actors ADV has to offer. But you wouldn't know that after hearing the Eva dub. (shutter)

I watch the dub with the subtitles turned on.

Therefore, I'm inbetween liking sub and dub.

I'm kinda obsessed, so I watch a dub, simply because it's (barely) easier (more like a habit), then watch the whole thing subbed right after I finish it. It works for me, so why complain?

When it comes to subs and dubs I do both, though i do like subs more. A lot of times I think Japanese VA do a much better job getting the emotions of the characters down than American VA. Like the Japanese VA that did Chiyo-chan on AzuManga. I can't see her with any other voice than that one, it was just so perfect and sooo cute . On top of that, there are numerous amounts of anime's that I know of that just have crapy dub to begin with.

The few times I do watch my anme in dub is because of one of the following reasons.
1) My friends are over and they don't like to read subtitles.
2) It is late and I am too damn tired to read subtitles.
3) The subtitles are going so fast I can't keep up with them (This mainly ocurred during Excel Saga).

Then somtimes I even watch dubs with english subtitles on just so I can compare the too. Sometimes it is really funny to see how different the two actually are.

My favorite movie for this is Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie.

Because the dub is based on the (horrible) Cardcaptors TV show, the Japanese subtitles and the dubbed English are telling two completely different stories.

There are dubs that are quite credible, I just have a severe problem with 4Kids...they are the cancer of mainstream anime. Period.

I think most of the people who watch a subbed anime don't like/want to watch the dubbed version mainly because animation can only do so much. A person's impression on a character is also created by the type of voice a character is given, like high, low, feminine, fast, etc. When you hear it with a different voice actor, it kind of messes up your previous preception of the character. Unless the Japanese voice was total crap, then that's not the case.

I usually just watch the dubs because I am a truly lazy person (go me!) and I hate having to read the subtitles constantly. I'd rather enjoy the art than look at letters all the time. Also, since I love doing things like homework or doodling (often at the same time...) while watching/listening to anime, I'd definately prefer dubs. (Unless I've seen it so many times in Japanese that I know what they're saying even without subtitles. I did this with YYH vol 28 and four episodes of Naruto)

First off, this is a pointless argument as someone mentioned earlier. There's a Language menu on the DVD, folks.


That said, I've enjoyed subs and dubs of various anime. I think it's a genre thing, too - American VAs do a better job working with drama than, say, comedy.

Example #1 - Cowboy Bebop. Action anime. Universally revered as a 'classic' dub

Example #2 - Excel Saga. Comedy. Listen to the dub for more than 5 minutes without tearing your ears off. Go ahead, I dare you.


And of course there's stuff that blurs the line. I mostly watch subbed unless otherwise inclined, but I've flipped back and forth on a couple Geneon shows (Last Exile, Haibane Renmei) and was satisfied with the dubs. I've also heard mixed things about Azumanga Daioh, but after having watched the entire series subbed I can't imagine the voices being done any other way.
