Best connection to the Internet for Hosting?
Hello all. Hope I'm posting in the correct forum.
Anyway, I've recently set up an FTP server. It works fine except that the upload speeds simply aren't what I'd like. My ISP capped my upload speed at 40 KB/s and I think that soon they may make a policy limiting my number of GB I can upload.
Does anyone know what the best type of service would be for hosting? I've got RoadRunner cable modem, but would DSL be better for my purposes?
Thanks

If you want to do any kind of hosting, you need stuff with upstream bandwidth, and that rules out Cable modems (at least with most companies in the US) and ADSL. What you need is either fast SDSL or T1 service. SDSL has the same upstream as downstream, and 768Kbps SDSL would suffice for decent hosting. T1's can be gotten at the full 1.5Mbps, or in lower bandwidths like 1.1Mbps and 768kbps, but they cost much more. However, getting fast SDSL requires close proximity to a Central office whereas T1's don't.
Note that fast SDSL can run $400/month, and 1.5Mbps T1's are in the neighborhood of $700/month

You can get a 1.5Mbps T1 for <$400 per month, depending on your location and if you know where to look.
The *best* connection (to answer the original question) would probably be an OC-12.

All right, guys! Thanks for your input, especially ErMaC for the most practical connection. No way my parents are gonna change services, but I'll keep your advice in mind when I strike out on my own.
However, when I'm out of college, I bet that 0C-192 will be almost obsolete.......

These numbers are for Wash. state, but will give you an idea of where DSL prices are at now. They won't do the fast speeds for a home account, just the business accounts. The prices look significantly lower than they were last year.ErMaC wrote:Note that fast SDSL can run $400/month, and 1.5Mbps T1's are in the neighborhood of $700/month

Well, your box couldn't handle the full brunt of an OC-192, which is, for the curious, just a little under (44.736 * 192) = 8,589.312 megabits / second, which is just over a gibibyte/second. That's some serious bandwidth, and probably won't be a problem in the near future. (For the real problem, look more locally -- like at your hard drives.)y2kwizard wrote: However, when I'm out of college, I bet that 0C-192 will be almost obsolete.......
As for who actually has that kind of connection: Internet backbone providers. There are routers out there that are capable of handling the full force of that kind of bandwidth -- and there are routers that are capable of handling even more -- but they aren't likely to show up on your desk soon.
