Fast Editing

Post by Infinity Squared » Fri Feb 25, 2005 12:49 pm

Ok, the topic of this thread is on having to make an AMV within a limited timeframe. Specifically, I would like the question below answered:

What is the most reasonable length of time that one video can be made?

I sort of created a little hypothetical situation.

Let's say that we are in some sort of AMV competition and that at 12PM the anime footage are unveiled to the contestants. They run off and grab the anime footage and 2 hours later (due to transport reasons and whatnot), they get home and are able to start editing (so start time for editing is 2PM).

Next day the screening of the finished product is suppose to happen at 1PM. Again, taking into account the 2 hour travel time for the venue, basically, the creators would have had to finish their editing at 11AM.

All in all, thats 9 hours in total.

Now take away from this about 3 hours whereby the creator may have used the time to eat and other of life's necesities.

That's 6 hours. Without sleep.

Can this be done and not have a mental breakdown in between?

Is having a 5 minute time recommendation for the video be too unreasonable?

Quality wise, I know for certain that the results will not be top notch but I'm just here to see if it can be done.

I also want to see a show of hands here of who believes they can brave such a competition.

Personally, I have made a 5 minute video in 5 hours but that didn't involve any preprocessing and final rendering. Feedback on this topic will be very welcomed because I am actually going to be using such information to run a new event for a convention.

There's a comp named Iron chef where they only have 2 hours to do a video and have their sources and music picked for them (without knowing beforehand).

2 hours?!

Wow, ok, that's heaps more challenging than the 6 hours I was projecting. How would that have been done? Do they have equivalent machines running there to do the editing (comps with the same processing power and programs)? I'm assuming this is not done in a convention sense but a stand alone competition?

An Iron Chief contest. The footage is already selected for you. You have to use a song that they have on the list there plus use three special ingredients. You are given the regular footage ahead of time to look at it and also the songs as well. But you get two hours to edit. That's the basic for an Iron Chief.

Both Convention and Standalone online contests.

Hmm... I was thinking that the only thing they will ever have known from the beginning is the music, which they will have the choice in. The footage is something I pick for them, but they will have absolutely no idea what it will be beforehand, not even a "the footage could be one of these x number of anime"

In AWA's Iron Chef, there's one "secret ingredient" that the contestants don't know about until the editing time begins. There is other footage that is chosen beforehand that the contestants know about. The music is up to the contestants, and there's also a theme they have to adhere to.

Also, it's so loud in the room while they're editing that they can't hear their audio :?
I have no idea how to use this new forum.

Ummm, no. From 2pm to 11am the next morning is twenty-one hours not 9. Even taking 8 hours off for sleep, food, whatever would still leave 13 hours to edit. More than enough time for a competition.

There is the French Online Iron Chef also where they have a full 24hours (I think) to edit in.

Yup.

24 hours non stop editing on a song chosen by a member of the jury (participants choose themself their series to edit)
