Why are so many people against using rap music in AMVs?

Post by RamonesFan2020204 » Tue Feb 08, 2005 8:04 pm

I'm gonna tell ya right now, I'm white, and I'm not a white guy that thinks he's black (I don't mean to sound racist), but I LOVE rap just as much as I love hard rock. I don't understand why so many people think it's a bad idea to use a rap song in an AMV. If you try, you can find a rap song that's good for any kind of AMV. Action, Comedy, Drama, Romance, whatever. So what's the deal?

I think it is just personal taste. An editor will edit (typically) to the songs that they enjoy. It seems to me that a majority of the editors (at least those that post on the forum) prefer other types of music than rap or hip hop.

I'm not sure where you read it but there is nothing wrong in using these genres...

The way I see it, lyrics are central to most rap songs, which makes them an obvious target for synching in AMVs. However, the lyrics of rap songs are often very specific and are likely to be about things you don't usually find in anime, which makes them hard to find footage for to match.

(... said the editor who'd never met a well-done lyric synch he didn't like. :P )

I don't always go for lyrics, I sometimes just go for how the song sounds (eg The Tempo, The Beat, etc)

I think there can be such a thing as too much lyric sync and too much lip sync (I personally am guilty of both sometimes). Rap music tends to lend itself to using an excessive amount of lip and lyric sync. As far as I can tell a bad editor using a rap song is much worse than a bad editor using some other form of music. In the hands of a good editor there's no problems using rap though.

I dont think its that people are against using rap, but rather that most people simply lack the desire to create a rap amv. I have been pondering this question myself for awhile as I have ideas for around 6 rap amvs that I plan on making now that I am in the second semester of senior year and have free time. I think that a small part of the problem is what Scintilla said in that the lyrics of rap songs rarely lend themselves to making amvs.

However i think the main reason there are very few rap amvs is that people use music that they like, and for most part people within the amv community and the entire anime watching community are simply not the same people who (god i hate to generalize like this but i think that in htis case its mostly true). The songs you choose to use for amvs are obviously going to be ones that you have heard and therefore will most likely be what you like. If there were more anime watchers/amv creators who appreciated rap music, there would be more rap/hip hop oriented amvs.

Another problem, is that there are very few good rap amvs to serve as examples that will cause people to create more. I wanted to see if the song "Move B-tch" by Ludacris had been used already and i foudn this, which i cannot recommend downloading as I can only hope it was made as a joke, and cannot figure out why anyone bothered to upload it.

I have been hoping for more hip hop amvs to be created, but so far, there are very good ones (that I know of anyway). If your like me, and you really do wanna see more rap amvs, then start making them. People are influenced by what they see, and if someone makes some good rap amvs, i think more of them will be sure to follow.

This thread is very well timed as I actually just saw Ho's of Eva by Tsunami Jones, which was great, and was wonderin if there are any other good rap amvs.

Because I'm not a fan of most rap music.
Because I make videos from music I like.
Because I don't listen to much rap, at all.

Two of my favorites are Apocalypse Wow!

And Variation 3 Forever

And since you liked my Ho's of Eva vid, you might want to check out Gunsmoke Outlaws one as well.
