Classical-type Music?

Post by aurora » Sat Sep 14, 2002 10:18 am

does anyone have any suugestions on music like, say, the Princess Mononoke theme? i mean classical music, or that style, because it's easily my favorite kind, and i'm always looking for more of it! :)

"Symphonic" might be the word you're looking for.

Since you like Mononoke, any of the Miyazaki movie soundtracks will do as well. They are all composed by Joe Hisaishi, including Nausicaa, Kiki, Totoro, Porco Rosso, Castle In the Sky, Spirited Away.

Kenji Kawaii has also done many anime soundtracks. Vampire Miyu, 3X3 Eyes, etc.

Any of the Record of Lodoss War CDs.

The soundtrack for the 2nd Tenchi movie, The Daughter of Darkness (aka Manatsu no Eve) is one of my personal faves. That's composed by Ko Ohtani.

And the CD for the first Tenchi movie (Tenchi Muyo In Love) has some nice pieces. It was done by Christopher Franke, ex-Tangerine Dream, who also did the BGM for the Babylon 5 TV series.

If you want some really great symphonic pieces, try searching for a CD called Eternal Melody on WinMX. The music is by a Japanese artist named Yoshiki Hayashi (usually just called Yoshiki).

Also look for, by the same artist, a cover of Kiss's Black Daimond. It's a cover, only it's all orchestra and it sounds magnificient.

McKennitt does good work - I mean, for a Canadian. :o (So that's why Vlad used "Mummer's Dance".) But I don't think she uses orchestras, except maybe occasionally; e.g. "Beltane Fire Dance" is done by only 7 or 8 people.

Just razzin' the people "up north", of course. I got hooked on McKennitt a few years back and bought all of her CDs. I'm still waiting for a new release from her. Wish she'd hurry it up.
