base 10 scoring system to replace stars
Just had an idea. The 5 star scoring system we have now lends itself to lazyness because people dont have to think much about it. How about replacing it with a base 10 or 20 system, so people will (hopefully) think a bit more about the socre they give, and hopefully make it that much more meaningfull.

Or just more noise. The star scale is supposed to be a quick reaction to the video; opinions are for in-depth considered reactions.
A five-star scale works fairly well for quick reactions. Consider:

Where did I leave that [rusty?] spoon to gouge my eyes/ears out?
Boring. Next!
Yeah, whatever.
Nice.
ZOMG! I must set it on loop and spam #AMV!

Whatever would you do with a 10-point scale? I could see a three-point qucik reaction scale {suck, ok, rocks} or even a two-point one {indifferent, like} but 10 is hard.

Hey Bum,
The star scale was moved up from a three point scale (cool, eegh, suck) to the five point scale to give people a little more exacting room. The problem with moving to a 10 point scale would be the exact same problem the opinions system has: People can't get the old school-grade mentality out of their heads that 9=A, 8=B, 7=C, 6=D, 5 and below = F, which in itself is a 5 point scale. Repeating that problem with the star scale would not accomplish anything.
I hope this helps.
