is very comic

I think that's not a bad idea - I wouldn't try to go with a comic slant though

Make it so serious that it's funny (and use some characters you wouldn't intend to see conveying a serious message of brotherly love and understanding, like, say, Pokémon). That's what I'd do.

It's been ages since I heard the song. I'm sure there's many ways you could go. I'll leave it to someone else's interpretation, to do this right requires skill beyond mine. I recall many many popular artists of the day performed on this song - you could have fun "casting" each artist just like anything. But it's a great song - would be nice to keep the original thoughts in mind.
