Otakon video question? (release early or not to)

Post by genestarwind21122 » Wed Dec 29, 2004 1:40 am

I'm currently working on my Otakon submission. Yes I know kinda early but probably my only chance. I was wondering the video I'm working on is using a band never used before on the org and the band is brand new. I met the lead singer because we both worked at Blockbusters together and he saw some of my previous works and asked me if I could make a video for their band and put it up here on the org for people to hear their music. The question is since this is my Otakon video and this is a new band and you don't know what the reaction is to there music since it is only local people that attend their shows at the Thunder Dome and the Vault in Baltimore is what you have to go on. If you were using a new band and didn't know if people would like the music or not would you take the dice and gamble and not have it debut until Otakon. Or release what could possibly be a great video to soon and give people insight into what is coming?

Don't get me wrong I'm still doing this for the fun of it. Just want to know what you do in this type of situation?

I guess it comes down to the question of which you want more: a speedy release and more time to spread, or greatest possible impact at the con. (Of course, you'd also have to consider how many of the con-going audience would have already seen it if you released it early, if you think it'll make the finals, etc.)

In 2003, I'd be inclined to say screw it and just release it as soon as you have it finalized.
In 2004, I'd be inclined to say screw it and just save it for the con.
So I don't know.

But personally, I don't think choice of music would influence my decision.

Who cares?

Otakon has no rules against premiering a video shown at Otakon outside of Otakon. (Yet.)

In such circumstances I'd just release the thing as soon as it's done.

You should see videos that got nominated for VCA for best dance. Don't judge them by their music.
