Audio sample rate is 4
I recently dl'd an amv, but the sound does not play back. Ive used several players, tells me it cannot load certain things etc. the problem might be cause its sample rate is 4 bit? not sure if thats it, but thats the only 4bit vid Ive come across..
If ya's need sum more info, I'll be glad to tell more.

If the sample rate is coming back as 4-bit, I'm inclined to think that it's just your system not knowing what to do with the file. It could be that the file in question is damaged, or that it uses an audio codec that you don't have on your machine. ADPCM is 4-bit, but I have no idea why someone'd deliberately use this level of encoding unless the source audio was unavailable in any better version.
If you could provide a link to the video in question, and maybe some specifics of what players you've tried, it would provide a great deal of help for people looking to answer your question.

Just to clear up terminology:
Sample rate refers to how many samples per second are saved in a file; the standard is 44100 Hz. DVD audio uses 48000 Hz.
Bit depth, which I think is what you're really talking about here, refers to how many bits are used to store each sample. The greater the bit depth, the wider of a dynamic range you can get (and hence better quality). The standard is 16-bit; audio editing programs like Adobe Audition edit natively in 32-bit float; I believe 24-bit is also used in dealing with high-quality audio.
As Kai Stromer said, ADPCM is a 4-bit format. Offhand I can't think of any other audio formats that are or usually are; 4-bit uncompressed PCM would likely sound horrible.

People who do this are generally people who are compressing their audio in their editing package (premiere etc) and pick this one from the list in the default ACM like the fools they are.Kai Stromler wrote:ADPCM is 4-bit, but I have no idea why someone'd deliberately use this level of encoding unless the source audio was unavailable in any better version.

The audio codec used is indeed Microsoft ADPCM, 4-bit depth but 44.1 kHz sample rate. I was able to play this video back, with audio, through WMP 6.1 on a Win2K Pro install that has had very little in the way of codecs on it; you might want to try picking up ffdshow and/or mplayer, as those are basically what I've got equipped.
As for why, AD's explanation is the most likely; the video linked is decent videography-wise, but has aggregated about every technical production mistake that it's possible to make.
