56k modem. seriosl issues

For the past two months now, my modem has bein playing up, alot. It used to almost allways conect at 49.2k and dl's would go at 4.7-5.3k. Then one day windows sudenly died on me and I was forced to do a clean install (xp home with sp1. its a legit copy, so no dodgy pirated winxp issue's). After that I started having serios problems. My modem allways conects between 24 and 33.6k. usualy its 33.6, but most of the time when it conects at that speeds, my downloads go at around 1.6k, which makes hanging around forums painfull, and downloading any software/media and absolute nightmare. the phone line is conected to my (pci) modem through a 5 meter extention line, but its bein like that ever since I had the net, so its not the problem. I tried dling the latest modem drivers from www.conexant.com . When I double clck the exe to install the drivers, a loading bar comes up, and 3 seconds later my comp crashes and restarts. I tried installing them through the device manager, that didnt work iether. I reinstalled windows again yesterday. The dl speed went back to its good old 49.2k , that was the first time i dailed up. from then on, every time I got on it would go back to the same speed issue's I was having before. The only things I have installed are ac97 audio driver, ati catalyst 4.1, firefox, winrar, divx, max payne and msn6.2 , so nothing that would conflict with my modem.

Anyone got a solution to my problem?

Check your maximum speed settings in your modem configuration and jock them to the max (112KB/S, Yes, I know it can't go that fast, but do it anyway)

... I think you may have a bad PCI slot, have you tryed putting your modem
in a different PCI Slot?

Zero has the right idea -
pull-up your Modem in Control Panel.

under General,
make sure your using COM 3 thru 12
Speaker Off
set your Baud Rate to 115200.

under Connection,
8
none
1
click - Port Setting,
check the FIFO box and place recieving and forwarding to "MAX" and click"ok".
click - Advanced,
check Error Control, Compress Data and Flow Control plus Hardware and click "ok".

click "ok" to get back to General and "ok" to close-out the Modem.

Restart your Computer, Start, Control Panel, Modem, Diagnostics, More-info
( this will test your Modems new setting and should show the AT# codes )
note: if any of the AT# codes say's ERROR, then move your Modem to a
different PCI slot; if the test fails again - its your Modem's Uart that died.

as far as Programs that interfere with a Modem, only Editers like VirtualDub
can interfere with the Modems signal and will usually shut the Modem off.

a five meter telephone cord is not an issue to speed, its called a Modems
Handshake - that's what set's the speed you connect at; and if your Uart
went bad, THAT would normally be the cause for the slow connection speeds.

- just a thought from someone who remembers 75 baud Modem problems

Post-it: Thanx for all that info, but I couldnt find all the setings. Some also seemed to be in different places than you mentioned. What OS are you using? I'm on winxp home sp1.

Corran: Thanx for the prog, but I'm gona have to have a good read through the manual to get my head around it. It isnt exactly n00b freindly (sometimes you just with you could get a program that, with one button press makes everything the way you want it to be)

. Win95 thru WinXP are all about the same with regards to MTU settings.

The program is almost that easy to use. First you might wish to backup the registry using its backup feature under the registry menu. Then you load a profile that is specific to your connection.

File -> Open Custom Settings File
You'd probably want to use the one in the 56K folder called: 56K_2k.ccs
Once it is loaded you click the save to registry button.

I did that, nothing worked. mabey that DRTCP prog postit llinked to will, i seriosly hope (Im downloading Tsukin's latest amv now, its going at 1.5k)

Yea, I had a problem with my modem connecting too slow under win xp. I fixed it by moving to somewhere that I could get cable.

DRTCP didnt work. I tried moving my comp to my loung and conecting my original phone line to my modem (to see if the problem was with the extention). That didnt work iether. So right now its iether a problem with the modem itself or the drivers. gah, this is so damn painfull.

I would do that if I could get a job, which wouldnt be too hard if I wasnt so damn lazy.
