Indeed.

Download, virtualdub /savewav, listen.

Even so, limiting bandwith would be lame, and probablly wouldn't do much to stop them.

Yes, these people don't look like they care about bandwith. If they're kids, they probably aren't even paying for their net connection.

Another thing that makes it unlikely that people will just use the org for ripping mp3s out of the videos... they have to actually find a video which it would be easy to rip the audio from. This means AVI files. The vast majority of videos on the site are WMV files. Particularly for popular songs. Another good bit are MPEG-1.
You also have to consider the level of competency required to even rip the audio from an avi. Assuming that someone is stupid enough to download amvs to get their music, we aren't particularly talking about the brightest of the bunch here. It's unlikely that they know what virtualdub is. It's also unlikely that they know how to use google to find the answer to anything. Any people remaining would be an INCREDIBLY SMALL minority of users. So statistically insignificant that they aren't even worth mentioning, really.

don't you people have a concience?!?!

Anyways, like others have pointed out, ripping the audio may not seem complicated, but to someone with no idea how these programs work, it would be like telling me to crop an image in photoshop.

Anyone who doesnt know how to rip the audio would just play the video for the music anyway.

Isn't that the main reason most people on this site get amvs? For the song used? That's how they search and decide what video to get - song first, concept/anime/blahblah last if it's a consideration at all.

Just look at any of the "how do you decide which vid" threads we've had. Music distribution is sort of the point.

Back when Phade and I were first working on pompom (the first local download server) --- what was that, 1.5 years ago now? --- the plan was originally to have different download speeds for members and non-members. It never happened, because apache didn't have the functionality to do it, at least not easily, and its never turned out that we needed it.

AFAIK, that hasn't changed, so bandwidth limiting won't be happening. Simply to damn much work. And limiting download speeds would make people downloading videos substantially worse off, especially when kero finally comes on line, and we think about raising the file size limit.

I don't think downloading a video from .org then ripping the audio from it could be faster than just downloading the MP3 or Ogg; nor would it in most cases sound to good.

If you're worried about RIAA (and you probably should be), go get the law changed. That'll be a far better solution.
