Should we allow people to take names from inactive accounts?

y'all, please don't forget that not all members are video editors, and that some people use their accounts for downloading locally hosted videos even though they don't intend to make any themselves.

Just something that regulars tend to forget. Thank you.

I think this is why one of the criteria is 'has not been used in a year or more'. I think 'being used' is covered by logging in.

What if "[Inactive]" was slapped at the end? That wouldn't sound so harsh.

This is the internet. By now you'd think people are used to their desired names being taken, especially if it's a common name or fictional characters name. I mean is life really that rough being known as Naruto492 instead of just Naruto? After all, I'm godix because god, godI, godII, godIII, etc were taken years ago when I first hopped on an internet forum and my life wasn't devestated by it. Hell, anymore I wouldn't want godI through godVIII even at places they're avalable. Common names were taken years ago, deal with it and tack on a number like everyone else.

OTOH I find it difficult to imagine an account that's actually desired matching all of AD's requirements. A single post saying "Is Teen Titans or Batman anime?" and your exempt from this because of the 'no posts' thing. If the admins are willing to go to the effort I can't see any realistic reason to oppose this.

I wasn't going to get rid of it, just rename it out of the way.

Well, I was sort of thinking that a 2-year-old post in Way Off Topic really doesn't matter anymore...

- OK, I'm understanding the basic question and agree with the "log-in" value
for downloading as an Active Marker.. My thinking on this would
not be for the General Public, I'm thinking of the Armed Forces people who
are sometimes TDY or go oversea's and do not have access for 6 months to
3 years at a time.. If a "clause" were asked when they sign-up
that had a "checked location" saying "Active Military and/or National Guard"
were part of the Sign-up + the Log-In on that persons "name" - could that
account then be easier to manage?

criteria:
Name:
E-mail:
Active Duty/ National Guard/ Reserves: yes/no

because most people who are active duty have no control over where or when
they are being sent somewhere and/or what they can/can't take with them!

-just a thought

Post-it: If the person hasn't been actually doing anything on the site, and they happen to leave for over a year... then why does it matter if their account disappears? I mean... you are making it sound like they are LOSING something... but if they never did anything to begin with, then there is nothing for them to lose other than just their member name, which may not necessarily even get taken by someone else. By comparison, I've seen forums that kill user accounts after 3 months, active or not :|

Should'n't have pruning killed those threads off? :?
