What is my top 10% score?

Post by mckeed » Tue Nov 02, 2004 7:00 pm

I think it would be nice to see where you video stacks up against the top 10% if your video is not on the list but qualifies to be calculated. (Greater than 7 oppinions). Maybe this can be in your profile view or on the "edit my videos" page. Since this is calculated anyway if it has greater than 7 oppinions it shouldn't be so hard to implement. What do you think?

You can read through the lists until you find it.

Hopefully, it was a very good video. Otherwise you'll be reading those lists for a very long time.

What lists? The top score listings only list the top 10%.

That's why mckeed is complaining (and because the placement is not available anywhere else either)>

Finally, someone who actually understands. The top 10% score is calculated if you have 7+ oppinions. I just want to know what the score is when you don't make it on the 10% list as this number is really the only number that really matters since it is more accurate than current way the average oppinion score is different than the method used on the list.

The only number that really matters? Tell me, why does this number matter? Is it some majical number that tells you exactly what videos that your video is better or worse than? The fact that AMV Hell ranks among the top 10 videos on the site should be testiment that the number means absolutely nothing more than a popularity contest. I mean, amv hell is a piece of SHIT video. Certainly not a *better* video than most of the things that fall below it on the list. It just happens to be popular.

People who think that it actually matter in an immideate and real sense are indeed fooling themselves.

On the other hand, *I*'d like to know all my scores. I don't think having good scores makes me look like a better editor - nevermind actually making me a better editor.

But, as I put it, for sport, I'd like to know. It's just fun, kinda like a game. Think of it as placing a high score on a game machine at the arcade. Yea, I know, great achievement - some bored kid who doesn't have change to actually play the game might stare at the machine for a while, see a three-letter abbreviation of your name and think 'WHOA'. Will that change your life? Nope. But getting that score up there is like a semi-imaginary reward for a challenge you took up, and it's neat to know how you fared compared to others after you finished playing the game.

And it's doubly as neat to know when this 'game' is actually something you put a lot of careful work and attention into.

So yea, I'd like to know my score. And I may well be the least competitive editor you've ever known. No complicated, highly personal reasons here - as I said, just 'for sport'.

So use a calculator.

Hell, maybe we can get someone to write a Firefox extension.

I'm certainly not saying this is the most crucial improvement to the site to put on the 'To Do' list; but hey - isn't the whole site about convinience to AMV editors and fans in the first place? I'm sure a small added convinience is not something that'll hurt...
