The Holy Grail - Resuming a Download
Okay, I'm a rational person. I don't get angry at people. I don't mind it when I use a program and it crashes 100 times in a row. I don't mind that I live in the middle of nowhere and my phone company sees it fit to cap my phone lines so that I only get a 28.8kbs connection. I don't mind that when it rains the 30 year old phone lines in the area get wet and disconnect me several hundred times an hour. That is all fine and dandy. Why? Because I have GetRight. With GetRight I can go anywhere and download anything. I have no need for its acceleration tools since my connection is so crappy that it won't support it. That's all okay, since it has the ability to resume a download even during the worst rain storm from the slowest server. That's okay. It's okay that it takes me over 1 hour for every 10megs I need to download at a sluggish 1.5 - 5kbs rate.. I can wait, because its okay, and I don't get angry.
However, recently I'm been getting a little...pissed. Why? Because I have Windows XP SP2, Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Mozilla Firebird 1.0, Opera, and the latest GetRight...and I still can't freaking resume a SINGLE LOCAL DOWNLOAD FROM THIS SITE!!!
I have done everything and still can't do it. I've set all of my various programs so their cookie settings are correct. I've set them so that they don't block things from this site and the security is extremely low. I've used the special website and cookie settings that GetRight uses and have logged in with it. What happens? It crashes GetRight 5.2a, that is what happens. I've read the recent threads about this very thing yet nothing helps. I've done it all and yet I can't even begin to resume one bloody download from animemusicvideos.org on any web browser!!!
But, sometimes I get lucky. Sometimes my net connection won't be disrupted for 8-12 hours at a time and I'll be able to download a single AMV. Oh, but those days are rare indeed.
So, I ask you, you who can resume your downloads, how do you do it? What program(s) do you use and what special changes to your settings have you done to do this seemingly impossible feat?

You know when you lean back in a chair on two legs and almost fall but just catch yourself at the last second? Well, that's how I feel all day.

I've never had trouble resuming with firefox.
Granted, I've never had to seriously use the resume feature, since it normally takes all of about 1 minute for me to download a video. But every now and then I'll just hit pause, just for the hell of it you know, then resume it after a bit, just to make sure its working. And it does

Try turning on bit_dl_nwo. That'll probably make GetRight work, as long as the download is completed in 24h.

Kalium, I read that a while ago, but thank you anyway.
Zarxrax, for me Firefox just sits there when I try to pause then resume a download. If I loose my net connection then it sets the download to 0%. Opera simply sets it to 0% if its paused or the net connection is broken and I try to resume. IE...well, that's a laugh. lol
derobert, I just tried that, per your advice and GetRight does the same thing. I even wait about 1.5 minutes between each click, try, and have set all timed things to more than 60 seconds in hopes that my problems simply stem from the "you tried to download a file too soon since your last download" curse.
The real problem is losing a net connection completely. That's why I wish GetRight would work on this site, just to resume a download.
This also happens to be one of the reasons why I'll not be donating to this site, even though this is a great site.

What exactly happens when that bit is set? It doesn't start downloading at all?Deiscorides wrote:derobert, I just tried that, per your advice and GetRight does the same thing. That's really weird, are you sure its using the new download thing? Key indicators are the download page being 'localdownload-anthony.php' and having the "here" link be a really long thing ending with the video file name, like this:
http://nago.animemusicvideos.org/video/ ... _MPEG4.AVI
where that XXX...XXX part is a long string of hexadecimal.

derobert, yes, I am sure. I tried it for several things then changed that setting back to the original.
However, after tinkering with FlashGet 1.65 for IE I am finally able to download, pause the download, resume the download, and yes even resume the download after the net connection has been disconnected by outside forces!!! Woot!
I thank, Eek-1, here on the forums for recomending it.
Now, here is every step I took in order to achieve this. I am writing this for anyone to read so do not take offence of it if you already know all of this.

I first downloaded FlashGet version 1.65 from this link: http://www.click-now.net/download/FlashGet.htm
After I downloaded, unzipped, and installed the program I simply followed these paths to set up the program properly:
I clicked on Tool, then Options. You can press Alt+O for this as well. In the tab labeled "Connection" I changed the "Retry Delay" to 62. I made sure the "Limit" for "Max simultaneous Jobs" was set to 1.
In the "Site Manager" tab I "Added" a new entry. The "URL" I pasted there as,
http://nago.animemusicvideos.org
I then made sure that the "Login to Server" check box was checked and that I correctly typed in my "Username" and "Password" for the Anime Music Videos site into that FlashGet form. I made sure that the "Only create one connection for each file in this site" check box was checked. I set the "Number of simultaneous connections for this site" value to 1. I then clicked on the "Ok" buttons to finish.
I then used Internet Explorer to go to the Local download I wanted on the Anime Music Videos site. Once on the final download page for that file and 10 seconds had passed AFTER the page fully loaded, I right-clicked on the link provided that is labeled, "here" and then in the small pop-up menu I clicked on, "Download using FlashGet". This brought up the FlashGet program and a small pop-up settings menu within FlashGet labeled, "Add new download". In that settings menu I made sure that the check box for "Find alternate URLs through the mirro list or Ftp Search" was Not checked.
Further down the settings menu, I made sure that the "Split file part simultaneous" was set to 1. I made sure the "Login to Server" check box was checked and that my correct "Username" and "Password" where both in the input fields on that settings menu. I then clicked on the button labeled, "Save as default" and then I clicked on the button "Ok".
From there the download began. You should see your file being downloaded in one of the main windows of FlashGet. To pause or start the download after pausing it or having it interupted you only need to right-click on the file's name in the download window and select the action you want to take.
Now for the very important part! If the download is paused by you or your net connection is cut you should make sure to wait a little MORE than 60 seconds between each try. If you do not then the download will not continue. But, if for some reason you accidently try to resume the download too soon then there's no worries because all you need to do is wait longer and try again. Mine worked every time so long as I waited more than 60 seconds between retries. Best part is that you'll not have to start your downloads from nothing again.

derobert, to better answer your question I think that your link for a download is a bit different. The URL listed for the "here" link for me ends in "downloadlocal.php?v=XXXX" XXXX being the number of the AMV for the php file to search. If I click on it then my browser will try to download the movie file. This page come after the "Pledge Pledge Proceed" page of course. The title for that page is "++| A M V - Local Download"
I think this may be due to the fact I have not donated, but you have. The URL from the "here" link that you provided above looks like a direct link to the movie file. If I had that URL then I know for certain that any download manager would be able to resume it since it does not have to go through the specially coded php file.
That may be everyone's problem if they have not donated, where as anyone that has donated doesn't seem to have problems with resuming downloads with Opera or Firefox in the normal way. What do you think?

Uhm...
That last sentence you said was 100% wrong. I haven't donated and I can still resume and do all the other things donated people have (except some search features). I was on a 28.8kbps dialup for a while (3 years, thank god for cable), and was using Opera. I never, in my use of Opera, had one download that DIDN'T resume. Now that I have cable (and a 10x faster computer), I use Firefox and although I rarely pause downloads, I haven't seen one not resume yet.
Since this is also a "local" server, and the way it's set up, there is a way to link to the files directly, but that would be too much pain on our coders (poor derobert...) and even harder to impliment. It takes you to the "downloadlocal.php?=XXXXX" page because each video is assigned a number. If XXXXX=the video you're trying to get, then it finds it, queues up a download, and lets the user download. I've tried getting in with GetRight when I had dialup, and the furthest I could get was to downloadlocal.php, which is just one little PHP file with a script I don't even want to imagine.
That answers your paragraphs, for the most part...

I wonder why it is I have had such difficulties with it since I first joined this site? That last paragraph was just a thought, since I had no way to test it myself. A lot of theory can be cancelled out by only a little experience. lol
As for the "downloadlocal.php?=XXXXX" part, I have never seen anything other than that. Never once had there been an actual url for the movie file.
As for Opera 7.54 and Firefox 1.0, they work exactly the same as IE 6.0 SP2 does for me, which is crap all around regardless the amount of tweaking I do to them.
Thank you for your input, BrsrkEva. It helps me rule out several things. Thankfully, FlashGet works for me.
