What makes an AMV good?

Post by Adv1sor » Fri Nov 12, 2004 12:02 pm

What makes an AMV good?

Good music? Quality video? Some match between the two?

Should an AMV tell a story? Provide some exciting action? Make you laugh? Make you cry?

When you sit down to create a AMV, do you start with the song? With the video? Or do you start with an idea of something waiting to be expressed?

Some AMVs leave me rolling on the floor laughing so hard I can barely breath. Some are filled with gothic imagery accompanied by foreboding driven music. Some, like mine so far, are merely a random bunch of video and/or still pictures timed to change with the music.

I’ve only done a couple of AMVs myself, I will upload a third tonight. I am looking for input, ideas, and inspiration. What can you add?

If the video attempts a good thing (in the audiences opinion), and the video acomplishes that goal, the video is good.

If the video attempts something unforgivebly lame and it succedes, that video isn't good, its just well produced crap.

Take Shonene Buishudo for exmaple. The technicalities of that video are flawless. The effort is astounding. You can tell that the final product was a work of tireless effort and uncompromised vision. Its just to bad that vision is to make a souless, pointless, cheesy, eye candy fest for people not yet in their teens.

Bad idea -> Excellent execution -> Bad video

Good idea -> Bad execution -> It depends

Thats just my opinion anyway.

Sex.

If you want to hump the video after you've seen it, it's good.

This is like asking what makes a movie good, or what makes a book good. Different reasons for different people.

Stop playing Mr. Neutral.

whats wrong with playing neutral on this.. its an open question that has no REAL answer. so why even bother trying to give one...

after everything is said and done it's wether or not YOU liked it, that's all that really matters.

Subjectivity, indeed - everyone has their own criteria, as Zarxrax said.

For example, see my favorites list... I'm sure some of those vids aren't everyone's idea of a good video
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…
