Why do you buy/not buy a certain anime series?
Why do you buy a certain anime series? I mean if you think about it, anime series, legally, cost a lot. I have spent 200 dollars on Neon Genesis Evangelion. That's the whole thing, series, remakes, and movies. I mean if you work and your paychecks are around 300-400 dollars that is nearly half your pay check if not more. So, I am only wondering why yo ubuy certain anime series.
For me it is mostly recommendtions, or AMVs. I buy one dvd or if it is only 60 or lower I will buy the whole thing. I got all of Neon Genesis Evangelion on a remmendation from a friend, and that was my first boxset series. But if I just buy one dvd then it is the story that will keep me hooked. If there is not a good story I'll sell the series on ebay.
Second question
For what Reason do you NOT buy certain anime series?
Once again recommendtions, or AMVs. Of course if there is mixed reviews I'll go off the AMVs and decided for myself.

Recommendation (whether it's recommended by others, or recommends itself by means of AMV's, Fansubs, Trailers, etc.), Availability (price considerations included) and Usefulness (as AMV source). That's all, really.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Oh, and for the second part.
Lately, it's all been a money matter. Frankly, were I able to, I'd get virtually everything. That'd really help with AMV footage, and probably make for good amount of viewing choice, also.
The other part to it is, of course, priorities. I tend to prioritize my bying preferences, and, in the real world (especially in my Broke Student World), what you want to buy first and foremost, and what takes the back seat, usually ends up in me never getting around to buying the backseat at all...

Well, as for myself: Assuredly, there is no universal answer to either question, when I decide for my collection.
Indications - Buying:
When I see a prospect in series I do the following...
Examine series length (To get an idea on the total expenditures when all is said and done) to include additions like OVAs, and movies to the license.
Examine studio, a lot of times I'll decide favorably when I was 50/50 on the production studio. I think (for the most part) Production I.G. and GONZO can do no wrong.
Previous work of the staff. Directors, Series concept and/or creator, character designers... If I saw previous works and liked what I saw another plus.
Story. Always good, probably the biggest factor. If it caters to my taste, and I want to see more of it, that is another plus. I like new approaches to storytelling that work (as a writer). The genre obviously plays a role in what/how I can/should expect.
I buy in person (retail entertainment stores)
TRSI
Dvd Planet
Counterindications - Buying:
If friends have seen it, I ask for opinions.
If the story is uninteresting, or completely offensive to me.
Character designs that give me a headache.
Animation quality makes me tilt my head like a muddled canine.
That is just me though
I don't want anyone to think I am suggesting my methodology is superior.
It isn't. My way takes a lot of time (~ 2-3 days) and is full of danger in regard to spoilers (especially the friends part).
THIS IS IMPORTANT...
If you like what you see, and calculate the total price, and will not regret putting that money toward it... Go for it.

As for buying, if I have seen parts and really enjoyed it I may buy it. I may buy if I have seen clips in amvs that intrigue me. Usually I am trying to find something my son doesn't already have.
Main reason for not buying, my son already has it.

Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

Reasons to buy:
I seen it before and loved it
I seen parts of it and want to know more
I can get it for a great price (thank you TRSI)
Footage
The story sucked me in unexpectantly and I MUST have them all
Bonus features and extra stuff (i.e. Witch Hunter Robin Box- the soundtrack alone I would have bought it for but you add a shot glass, t-shirts and more...you can't resist)
Reasons not to buy:
I don't like the story at all
The story did not capture me as much as it could
The series is too long to get and sit around for episodes to come out
It costs too much
I already seen it so the desire to buy went away or not strong enough
It's on tv
I gotta pay some bills -_-

usually the only way i will buy a particullar anime is if i liked it
seen from fansub, seen parts of the actual product, or had a great reccomendation from someone i know
trailers are crap, they dont show much of anything, too choppy, and they just suck in general (commercials advertizing it are better than trailers)
the reasons i absolutely refuse to buy a particular anime is if it just sucked
friends scared me away, crappy fansub, bad voice acting, or if i just couldnt get into it (the last part has to do with ones like Monster, and Kurau Phantom Memories)
figures that usually come into play for both are availability, extra features, and prices (iv seen single dvd's going for $40.00)

I did say a simple approach was better as well. And the simplicity of your post was admirable.bum wrote:seriosly, why the hell do people have to meaninglessly complicate such simple things ?
I look over all the information I outlined soley so that I can be sure I will not regret it. With my efforts to be as thrifty as possible, yet still purchase a decent collection of anime, I unfortunately have to treat it like an investment. Studios charge money for distributing their intellectual, artistic property in the first place. Localization in English requires that the American, or other misc. nation company makes their profit margin for the commodity. And in that respect, with an entire series is (my next prospect is >$200), it is.
Evangelion Unit 01 merely asked us for individual answers. I gave mine.
I wish I could cast off my weariness and be like bum, I truly do.
