Your Top 5 Bands

I don't really have a static top five list, mainly because I give new music a chance and don't just assume evertything that I don't already listen to is bad. Some of the music I'm currently diggin' would be:

Built to Spill
Pinback
The Notwist
Weezer (yeah, whatever

It's even their older stuff)
Death Cab for Cutie
Dntel

laziness does have benefits, but i won't go into that.

what you're arguing is that before a person can claim favorites, he must have spent some effort actively searching for artists that he might or might not like. my argument would be that a person can have favorites even without actively searching for artists beyond the scope of what is presented to them - mainly mainstream. should they be allowed to state them on this post? i don't see why not. it's not like they're imposing their preferences on others, just blurting out what bands happen to be their favorites.

I'm just against ignorence, it's my biggest pet peeve. What's wrong with posting their favorites, based of what they currently know? Nothing really you're right. I just find it morally wrong and upsetting that they have their favorites picked out before even really knowing music. The main thing that got to me is that I KNOW some of these bands would not be on favorites lists if these kids looked into music a little bit.

And Jon, Touche with thw weezer. I whipped out my pinkerton album a week or so ago. that shit's almost 10 years old now.

My brother bought Bon Jovi's 7800° Fahrenheit and Bruce Springsteen's Tunnel of Love records in the same day and I wanted to disown him so bad. BUT-- the thing about getting mad about someone liking bad music, is that it's all based on opinion. There's nothing objective about music, so just because you hate Creed (and God knows I do to) doesn't mean nobody should like Creed. Likewise, I understand where you're coming from that there's lots of better Creed-like music than Creed, and yes it's mostly inexposure that keeps these bands under the radar; but, again, if somebody is satisfied to like Creed and Creed alone, that's their choice and they really can't be faulted for it. They don't have to "know" music. In fact, "knowing" music is a daunting task, since there's, you know, a hundred trillion records out there.

Anyway, if you (all of you) want to "know" more music, I suggest getting a lot of compilations. Probably 75% of all the music I listen to now can be traced back to compilation CDs I got at the Warped Tour in '96, or to my obsessive collecting of compilations with Beck tracks on them.
