Why don't you just rename file while "saving as"? I don't see how anyone should be obligated to conform to your file naming system. Just because it's convenient for you doesn't mean it should be law.darkpeace wrote:No offence, But was there even meaning to that post ?
Lets just assume you've got 3 Terabytes (3,072 Gigs) of Anime Music Videos, just how the hell are you meant to rename apx 45,000 files.

If I renamed all my files (I did it to my 4000+ mp3s and oggs in a day), I'd have to double check to see who made them, make sure it's spelled correctly, make sure the creator is spelled correctly, and I'm generally a lazy ass...Scintilla wrote:He meant for each downloader to rename the files him/herself when saving to his/her computer, not for someone to manually rename all the files that are already on the Donut.darkpeace wrote:No offence, But was there even meaning to that post ?
When I download vids: the filename it was uploaded as.
When I upload vids: if it's for a con: the conventional convention method. if it's just to the org: Brsrk-title of vid. Or if I'm not feeling lazy: Brsrk-title-anime-song (without spaces of course)
I have so many vids, none of which are renamed.

Hmm...
You know, if the .org had a clear guideline for naming video files included on the 'upload video' page that was clearly visible, I would personally follow it - and I'm sure so would at least a few others.
An easy suggestion to add to the page, perhaps?

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

That would require creating such a guideline; a better idea (which I've already mentioned) is to send your preferred naming scheme when you download. It's not that much code, I think; I just need to get off my lazy ass and do it...Otohiko wrote:You know, if the .org had a clear guideline for naming video files included on the 'upload video' page that was clearly visible, I would personally follow it - and I'm sure so would at least a few others.

You have a long list of things to do anyway, don't you?derobert wrote:That would require creating such a guideline; a better idea (which I've already mentioned) is to send your preferred naming scheme when you download. (from the other thread)derobert wrote:Hmmm, you know, this is something that could be an .Org preference. We have all the info in the db; we could generate the file name for local downloads per downloader's preference.
This is a REALLY good idea, and sounds even better then the org enforcing a format... although a default (since it always takes awhile before you find out about options when you're new) would be <nic> - <title>. (posted in 2004 Sept. , but a bit complicated)
Being able to super search by filename would also be really really cool. I know it's on the TODO list. (posted 2003 April)
Thirdly, a super search by `real name' would be REALLY nice, since I use <real name / or nic > - <year> - <title> ... but I have to use google site: to find the person's video or profile!
And yes, I was going to post this nice rant, wrote it out, and then went `maybe I can necropost this somewhere.....' Glad to hear 2 / 3 comments have been brought up to positive responses... if not action.
